Paul and Charmian Woodfield (see notes, below) write: 'Base metal finger-ring open on one side, and having enlarged snake head terminals. The interior has traces of silvering, suggesting that it was originally silvered all over. This is a well known Roman mass produced style of jewellery, which can occur in a variety of metals, including in gold (Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire - bracelet), silver, and bronze. The nearest similar findspot for a snake-headed artefact is at Castlethorpe (Buckinghamshire - pair of silver bracelets of c. 1st century; 1/2 mile distant) where other jeweller…

Treasure case 2004 T19: Disclaimed A gold finger ring with thin rectangular section hoop, somewhat distorted but complete. The hoop is soldered somewhat crudely to a rectangular bezel. The bezel is a box setting and is constructed from a flat rectangular plate with filigree wire around the edge; and an additional gold plate inside with raised edges, bent over to enclose a gem (now missing). The crude manner in which the hoop has been attached may indicate that it was a later addition, which scientific analysis to some extent supported as the gold content of the hoop and box setting …

A probably Roman silver finger-ring. This is a fragment and includes the bezel and approximately 45 percent of the hoop. The bezel comprises a slightly raised rectangular section (length 8.6mm; width 7.24mm). The front of the bezel has a small pattern cut in negative relief, possibly representing a bird in profile. Alternatively this may not be a pattern, merely damage. The hoop on either side of the bezel has been moulded to form a beaded section 10.26mm long. The reverse is plain and the hoop has a D-shaped section. Dimensions: approximate diameter 23.13mm; Weight 3.94g

In its current position, the internal diameter of the ring is 16.88mm, and the external diameter 20.21mm. The band is 10.34mm wide and is rectangular in section. There are three longitudinal ridges decorating the ring, the central one being decorated with a wreath design or two rows of dots. The decoration of the ring is similar to a design used on an armlet from Colchester, see Crummy (1983) p38 ref 1586. The ring has a dull copper-red patina with a small amount of green p…

The object is a cast copper finger ring. The bezel is a vertical rectangle, with an oval cell. The cell is slightly angled to one side, and is filled with a white filling, which is concave. This suggests that an intaglio was impressed and secured by the white substance, and is since missing. Either wise of the bezel, there is a vertical narrow rectangle forming the shoulders. Small portions of the loop, which are integral to the shoulders, protrude. The loop is a pointed oval in section. Only small portions of the loop remain, the breaks are not recent. The surface of the ring has trac…
