The copper-alloy core of a plated contemporary copy of a silver denarius, possibly of Elagabalus, and dating to the period AD 218 to 222 (Reece period 10). IVLIA SOAEMIAS AVG or IVLIA MAESA AVG reverse depicting female empress bust right. Mint not specified by RIC. cf. RIC IV, Pt II, p. 45, no. 207 and 208.
There is some uncertainty about the identification of this coin. It might also be a copy of a denarius of Severus Alexander with a reverse of Julia Mamaea. cf. RIC IV, Pt II, p. 95, no. 315.
Whatever the case, this is an exceptionally rare coin.
