A large flint flake, with evidence of secondary working / retouch, probably dating to the later (upper) Palaeolithic period (40,000 -8,300 BC). The flake is irregular in both plan and profile. The ventral (reverse) face of the flake exhibits a small bulb of percussion; however, the wave like ripples from the blow cannot be seen. Above the bulb of percussion is a small striking platform. The dorsal (upper) face has also a number of scars where flakes have been removed. This has left the body of the flint flake with several dish-like scars. The dorsal also has two areas of cortex (the ou…

Lithic implement: Hazel Martingell notes: This Palaeolithic handaxe is, so far, the first from Halstead, Essex. It is a very nice patinated and rolled example. They can be dated to the time between 500,000 and 200,000 BP. It is 100.3mm long, 72.5mm wide, 37.1mm thick and weighs 258.10g. The flint is mid brown with lighter brown patches. There is beige- white patination to one side. A cobble flint with some flake removals was also found at this location and is possibly the early stages of production of a hand axe. However it is too undiagnostic to date accurately.

A large fragment of antler, probably Palaeolithic (500,00-8,300BC). The fragment contains three branches and part of the main shaft. Angela Houghton (Natural History Curator, Museum of Reading) has identified this as an antler from a very large Red Deer. She adds judging from the size it must be ancient probably Palaeolithic. There are no tool marks or signs of use present. Dimensions: length: 270.27mm; width: 126.12mm; thickness: 43.97mm; weight: 481g.

A Prehistoric flint ‘pounder’ (500,000 – 800BC). This is a flint nodule where two flakes were removed to create the platform. From this platform several small flakes have been removed at a steep angle. The flint is not good quality. Around the edges there is damage caused by using the tool to strike something repeatedly. This is human use rather than accidental damage. Approximately 80% of the cortex remaining. Dark grey flint with some opaque patination. Face A of WAW-148C02 preserves evidence of 5 previous flake removals, the flake scars. These removals are generally indicative of centripedal flaking patterns, with the core rotating through the hands of the knapper. The scars of these flakes show broadly similar magnitude of damage e.g. abrasion of ridges between flake scars. This face of WAW-148C02 shows extensive ‘battering’ damage, in the form of a great number of incipient cones of percussion – the small marks that develop on flint as it impacts with other lithic materials, such as those shown within the dotted rectangl…

It is a tool made from the core; marks of secondary and tertiary flaking clearly visible along the cutting edge. The flakes would have been used as crude knives or scrapers. The Clactonian Culture is named after a superb collection of Prehistoric material found on a sit…

Incomplete Lower Palaeolithic handaxe of Acheulean type. Hazel Martingell notes that this object represents the tip half of the handaxe. Originally this tool was probably in excess of 200mm in length. Now it has a surviving length of 107.88mm is 105.68mm wide, 42.02mm thick and weighs 525g. The flint is stained yellow ochre and orangey in colour. The break looks like a natural frost fracture. The flaking was shallow and neat on both the dorsal and ventral surfaces. When complete it was probably ovate in plan. It dates from 500,000-200,000 BP (before present).

Lower Paleolithic Flint handaxe (dimensions 117 x 78 x 32mm) Cordate handaxe, with almost plano-convex section, in black flint (as shown by minor recent damage) with strongly contrasting patinations on the two faces - the convex face is patinated and stained brown, the almost flat face has a marked cream and pale grey patina ("toad belly"). Both faces are finished by shallow invasive flaking (soft hammer), with the planar face also having almost continuous finer edge retouch, in places giving a step-flaked edge. Palaeolithic handaxe of ficron type with a long tapering point. The object has been well worked on all surfaces. The general shape of the object is typical of handaxes of the period, and examples are known locally. The butt end of the handaxe has a large smooth notch, possibly the result of the naturally occurring shape of the flint nodule from which the object has been worked, and may well have been deliberate. A similar example is known from Cuxton in Kent. The axe has developed a varied and mottled patina, ranging from buff to grey to pink-beige.

A snapped large flint biface with relatively slight blue/grey patination. It has a surviving flake scar from an earlier implement with a thick pale grey patina. The snap is also lightly patinated but has some recent unpatinated edge damage. The implement type is unclear but may be from a dagger hilt or a large shouldered point, it is likely to date from the Upper Palaeolithic to the early Bronze Age.

A unifacial plano-convex handaxe made on a large flake which remains without further retouch on the bulbous face. There is extensive all-over heavy flaking on the dorsal face. The flint is a motled brown due to staining, the surface is relatively glossy and the flake edges are all slightly rounded suggesting either rolling or wind/water abrasion. This handaxe is Lower Palaeolithic in date. Dr Kevin Leahy adds: the unifacial form of this implement suggests that it was made using the Levallois technique which would allow it to be placed in the Middle Palaeolithic.

It is trapezoidal in section and has two angled vertical faces either side of a flat central vertical face. There are several chips along the edges, which are probably consistent with heavy useage. On the reverse there is a bulb of percussion. The rippling is difficult to see due to the heavy greyish-white patination. The tool measures 74.5mm long by 27.6mm wide and 7.7mm thick. An assemblage of 17 flint blades, probably ranging in date from late Palaeolithic to late Mesolithic. The wider blades probably date from the early Mesolithic period. They generally have two downwards angled vertical faces, which sit one either side of a flat central face. Some show evidence of re-touching or wear and most are fairly heavily patinated. One of the blades (bottom right in the photo) has a very wide central face and could date from the very late Palaeolithic period. The remainder of the blades are narrow and have a triangular section (ie. they have no flat face on top). T…

Complete lithic implement. Hazel Martingell notes: A good lower Palaeolithic small pointed axe. It is made on brown stained glossy flint and measures 65mm long, 48mm wide, 21.86mm thick and weighs 63.70g. It is possibly an adaptation from the tip of a larger pointed handaxe. There is a ‘platform’ at the base of this artefact from which two larger flakes (on the illustrated view) were removed. Two larger flakes were also removed from the ‘platform’ corners of the reverse side. It dates to 400,00-300,000 BP.
