Middle Paleolithic small cordiform biface implement in blackish flint with thick buff cortication (shown in the two areas of recent damage). Both faces finished by shallow peripheral flaking. Tip shows signs of ancient damage. General condition lightly rolled. Dimensions 65 x 55 x 17mm. Probably Middle Paleolithic (100000 to 40000BP).

Lower Palaeolithic bifacially worked, ovate flint handaxe. Heavily rolled, so that the number of flake scars is unclear, and stained orange. There is an area of damage on one of the faces, which would have been produced some time after the axe was made, but long enough ago for the area to have become heavily patinated, although not stained orange. From the Etwall sand and gravel layers. Length 78.16mm, width 59.58mm, thickness 27.08mm, weight 137.12g.

A small waste flint flake, weighing 17.3g. The flake has a striking platform and a bulb of percussion. There is evidence that previous flakes have been removed from the surface of the flake before this flake itself was removed from the core. Approximately 40% of the dorsal surface still has the original cortex surface surviving.

A small waste flint flake, weighing 18.8g. The flake has a bulb of percussion, but this feature has largely been removed by knapping resulting in the piece having a rounded end. There is evidence that previous flakes have been removed from the surface of the flake before this flake itself was removed from the core. The flake has been broken horizontally. Approximatley 10% of the original cortex surface survives on the dorsal surface of the flint.

A Middle Palaeolithic flint handaxe (40,000-8,300BC). Orange brown flint with approximately 40% cortex present. The handaxe has been bifacially worked from bad quality flint. It does not conform to any of the most distinctive types; it is more elongated than ovate. Length: 96.52mm; width: 58.77mm; thickness: 31.90mm; weight: 193g.

A unifacial plano-convex handaxe made on a large flake which remains without further retouch on the bulbous face. There is extensive all-over heavy flaking on the dorsal face. The flint is a motled brown due to staining, the surface is relatively glossy and the flake edges are all slightly rounded suggesting either rolling or wind/water abrasion. This handaxe is Lower Palaeolithic in date. Dr Kevin Leahy adds: the unifacial form of this implement suggests that it was made using the Levallois technique which would allow it to be placed in the Middle Palaeolithic.

A broad flint blade of probable late Palaeolithic to early Mesolithic date. The implement is sub-rectangular, with rounded corners. It is trapezoidal in section and has two angled vertical faces either side of a flat central vertical face. There are several chips along the edges, which are probably consistent with heavy useage. On the reverse there is a bulb of percussion. The rippling is difficult to see due to the heavy greyish-white patination. The tool measures 74.5mm long by 27.6mm wide and 7.7mm thick. It weighs 19.93g.

A damaged and incomplete flint blade of probable late Palaeolithic to early Mesolithic date. The remainder of the implement measures 57.8mm long by 19.6mm wide and 5.9mm thick. The upper surface has a flat central vertical face between two angled vertical faces. The edges are worn and damaged. The reverse is flat and unworked. The flint is a dark brown colour and has a heavily patinated white surface. It weighs 7.65g.

An assemblage of 17 flint blades, probably ranging in date from late Palaeolithic to late Mesolithic. The wider blades probably date from the early Mesolithic period. They generally have two downwards angled vertical faces, which sit one either side of a flat central face. Some show evidence of re-touching or wear and most are fairly heavily patinated. One of the blades (bottom right in the photo) has a very wide central face and could date from the very late Palaeolithic period. The remainder of the blades are narrow and have a triangular section (ie. they have no flat face on top). T…

A flint blade flake (Prehistoric). No areas of retouch. Orange/brown/grey flint with thick patina, there are some rust spots present on the flint. Small area of cortex (approx. 5%) on the tip of the flake. There are three removal scars on the dorsal surface. The flake appears to have come from the top of the core ?a core rejuvenating flake. There is some modern edge damage present. Length: 56.42mm; width: 23.36mm; thickness: 7.76mm; weight: 11.61g.

Complete lithic implement. Hazel Martingell notes: A good lower Palaeolithic small pointed axe. It is made on brown stained glossy flint and measures 65mm long, 48mm wide, 21.86mm thick and weighs 63.70g. It is possibly an adaptation from the tip of a larger pointed handaxe. There is a ‘platform’ at the base of this artefact from which two larger flakes (on the illustrated view) were removed. Two larger flakes were also removed from the ‘platform’ corners of the reverse side. It dates to 400,00-300,000 BP.

A possibly palaeolithic bi-facially worked tool. A small, abraded flint implement. Roughly triangular shaped, with a thick, irregular cross section. There is some nodule cortex remaning on the dorsal surface. It has been flaked on both faces. The core flint is banded pale grey and it is thickly patinated to a honey colour. Some plough damage.
