Lithic implement: Hazel Martingell notes: This Palaeolithic handaxe is, so far, the first from Halstead, Essex. It is a very nice patinated and rolled example. They can be dated to the time between 500,000 and 200,000 BP. It is 100.3mm long, 72.5mm wide, 37.1mm thick and weighs 258.10g. The flint is mid brown with lighter brown patches. There is beige- white patination to one side. A cobble flint with some flake removals was also found at this location and is possibly the early stages of production of a hand axe. However it is too undiagnostic to date accurately.

Incomplete Lower Palaeolithic handaxe of Acheulean type. Hazel Martingell notes that this object represents the tip half of the handaxe. Originally this tool was probably in excess of 200mm in length. Now it has a surviving length of 107.88mm is 105.68mm wide, 42.02mm thick and weighs 525g. The flint is stained yellow ochre and orangey in colour. The break looks like a natural frost fracture. The flaking was shallow and neat on both the dorsal and ventral surfaces. When complete it was probably ovate in plan. It dates from 500,000-200,000 BP (before present).

Complete Lower Palaeolithic flint handaxe. The axe is ovate, being oval in plan and section and is bifacial, having been worked on both faces. It has a twisted ''S'' profile. The surfaces of the flint have stained a creamy colour with large patches of orange, though the cutting edges (now blunt) reveal the inner flint to be light grey. The complete circumference of the flint is worked and flake removal is clear on one side. The opposing side is more worn and signs of production are less clear. The axe is 87.16mm long, 70.32mm wide, 23.92mm thick and weighs 182.54g. The twisted profile…
