Record ID: CORN-6C7AB6
Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint conchoidal flake with smooth conchoidal fractures rippling along the ventral face away from the bulbar scar, or bulb of percussion, and similarly on the dorsal face, within the negative flake scars. There is unimarignal retouch from the proximal end, down the right edge of the dorsal face, creating a slight notch about half way along the edge. There is also unimarginal retouch down the right edge of the ventral face, creating a definite notch about half way along. These notches might have been made in preparation for knapping the flake into a leaf-shaped arrowhead, as it looks as…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint retouched notched scraper, saw or spurred piece. The flake is unimarginally retouched on the distal end, creating three notches and one spur, and on the right edge of the dorsal face.
The colour of the flint is a translucent light to dark gray brown. About a third of the dorsal face is covered in cortex which suggests that this was a secondary flake. The ratio of length to breadth is about 1:1.
Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example of a notched saw on page 143, Fig.5.129, No.F150, and spurred pieces, Nos.F153 & F154 which are all dated to the Later Neolithic.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint scraper with a hinge fracture or hinge termination at the distal end of the ventral face. The dorsal face has been unimarginally retouched from the proximal end down both the right and left edges.
The colour of the flint is a mottled beigey gray with litte specks of iron staining on both faces. No cortex remains on the surface of the flake, which suggests that it is a tertiary flake. The length to breadth ratio is 1:1.
Andrefsky (1998), illustrates an example of a flake with a hinge termination on page 86, Fig. 5.1(c).
Bond (2004) illustrates a similar type…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint end and sidescraper, subrectangular in plan, trapezoidal in section, and triangular and arched in profile, with sub-parallel lateral margins, unimarginal worked edges on the right edge of dorsal face, and at the distal end. The right edge has been retouched to create a cutting edge with an angle of about 80º to 90º angle and distal end has been retouched to create an angle between 50º and 60º, which makes the edge effective for scraping but not acute enough to accidentally cut or slice the material being worked. The ventral side bears a long line of parallel scarring, running…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint conchoidal flake with smooth conchoidal fractures rippling along the ventral face away from the bulbar scar, or bulb of percussion, and similarly on the dorsal face, within the negative flake scar. There is retouch from the proximal end, down the right edge of the dorsal face, but the denticulations down the same edge on the ventral face look more like the resultant damage. This might have then been used as a crude saw, but there is no evidence of use wear, unless that is what has caused the damage to the proximal end.
The colour of the flint is a mottled mid to dark grey. …

Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
Early Neolithic polished stone axehead or possibly an adze. The tool is incomplete (the butt has broken away) and has been ground so that the surface is smooth. The width of the axehead/adze is unusually narrow and it may have been ground for reuse or used as a small adze. The blade edge is complete and is sharp. The stone is a bluish grey colour and is likely to be Langdale stone - known as greenstone. The greenstone comes from the intrusion of a narrow vein of tuff in the volcanic rocks of Great Langdale in Cumbria. The stone was suitable for making highly polished axes as well as r…

Incomplete chalk figurine. The figurine is of uncertain completeness and form. The surviving part of the object is roughly oval in plan with slightly concave sides. In cross-section the object is rectangular. The two longer sides of the object are original and complete, however the shorter sides are both broken, one of which has a circular looking break as if it continued into some form of neck or shank. The reverse of the object is rough and undecorated.
The figurine has an incised decoration on the front and the two long sides, and although not quite symmetrical in pattern,…
