A body sherd of late Iron Age pottery from a grog-tempered, wheel thrown pot, sometimes referred to as Belgic pottery. It is very dark brown with some patches of orange showing at exposed surfaces. It is possible to see part of a ridge that would have run the circumference of the vessel. The broken edges are worn suggesting damage occurred in antiquity. Dr Paul Sealey comments that this type of pottery was current in Essex from about 75BC in graves but did not become common on settlement sites for domestic use until 50-25BC. It remained in use and production in the early Roman period a…

The rim sherd is reduced coarse ware, which has probably been made locally, but no kiln sites have yet been identified (Booth and Evans 2001 Roman Alcester; Northern Extramural Area 1969-1988 Excavations. CBA, p. 49). The vessel was possibly a jar. The rim flares outwards at almost right-angles in profile. What remains of the wall is relatively straight. The fabric is a mid grey colour throughout with occasional small white rounded ?quartz inclusions. The reduced coarse dates to the Roman period, from the 1st to 4th centuries. The sherd weighs 21.8g.

The rim sherd is possibly a Malvernian Ware cooking vessel. The wall of the vessel is quite straight with the rim forming a bulbous top in profile. The fabric has a mid brown/grey coloured core with dark brown/grey mottled surfaces. The exterior has been smoothed, particularly when compared to the rough interior surface. The fabric has quartz inclusions which vary in size. The fabric is slightly sandy as well. The Malvernian Ware dates to the late Iron Age to the mid Roman period, up to the 2nd century. The sherd weighs 19.7g. Similar material was found in excavations in Alcest…
