Two small glass beads possibly dating to the early medieval period. The larger bead is oval in plan and roughly circular in section with a central perforation measuring 3.4mm. The bead is opaque and has a speckled surface - this looks to have been the result of mud on the rough surface rather than inclusions in the glass. The bead measures 11.29mm in length, 9.3mm in diameter and weighs 1.21g. The second, smaller bead, is short and tubular with slightly flattened ends. It has a central perforation measuring approximately 2.5mm which is discoloured around the edges, possibly where t…

A pale green monochrome glass bead, probably dating to the early Anglo-Saxon period. The bead is cylindrical in shape with a circular perforation. The bead has a length of 6mm and a diameter of 8mm. The bead is similar to some found in early Anglo-Saxon inhumation burials at Barrington in Cambridgeshire (e.g. Malim and Hines 1998, fig. 3.32, no. 63; also see p. 207-9), but small green glass beads are also known from other periods (e.g. Roman, medieval and post-medieval).

A glass bead. The bead is cylindrical, with a flat top and bottom and rounded sides. The centre has a circular perforation. The bead is of a green-blue colour. Similar beads are illustrated in West (1998, page 144; figs 28.4.1 - 28.4.11). The bead is likely to be Early Anglo-Saxon in date but this colour and form were in use over a considerable period of time.

A complete sub-cylindrical decorated polychrome glass bead, with flattened ends (diameter: 9.1mm; thickness: 7.7mm; weight: 0.87g), dating to the Early Medieval period, probably 6th-8th century AD. The dark blue/black bead seems to have been splashed with a range of colours after the initial monochrome bead was made, including yellow, red, grey/blue and off-white. These colours have been applied irregularly and in no distinctive pattern. The hole which is slightly off-centre in the bead (created by a metal rod when the bead was made) is also of irregular shape, with the diameter being …

Complete, glass linen smoother. This linen smoother is made from black glass and is circular in plan and a flattened kidney shape in section, being clearly domed on one face and slightly flattened and countersunk on the opposite. Within this countersunk, circular depression are the clear remains of the ‘stalk’ of glass where the smoother was separated by twisting from the maker’s glass rod. The surface has a patchy iridescent quality. It is heavily abraded, with a significant flake of glass chipped from one side on the domed underside. The abrasion and chipped area are worn, sugg…

A complete monochrome glass bead of possible Anglo-Saxon date. This bead is circular in plan measuring 18.6mm in diameter and 7mm in thickness. It has a large circular central perforation, measuring 8mm in diameter. The glass is a light pale green in colour with air bubbles visible within the glass. There are circular marks around this bead, presumably where it has been worked. The pale colour is found on early Anglo-Saxon beads (e.g. Brugmann's Doughnut type) but is not particularly common in beads of this shape, which tend to be a deeper blue or green (e.g. Brugmann 2004, fig.…

An opaque green glass short barrel bead. There is a similar bead described as Post-Roman illustrated in Crummy (1988 no.628 fig. 34 pg. 32-33), however it is 'black' glass rather than green. The bead may be Early Medieval. MacGregor illustrates a silver wire ring threaded with a green glass bead (1993 no.55.4 pg.262). The bead is unclear in the image but it is of a similar size to this bead. Dimensions: Diameter: 5.45mm; diameter of perforation: 1.49mm; weight: 0.18g.
