Early Early-Medieval iron knife, discovered with WILT-7E5176. It is 148mm in length and weighs 21.25g. It has a narrow tang c.7x5mm in section and c.32mm long. The blade itself is max.13mm wide and still sharp. It is mostly straight with very little curve. The back of the blade is slightly curving and 4.5mm thick. Both ends come together to create the point. The blade is triangular in section. Although the corrosion obscures much of the knife, it is probably most similar to Evison 1988 An Anglo-Saxon Cemetery at Alton, Hampshire p.23, fig.8, Type 3. This is known to have a wi…

Medieval iron double oval frame buckle, c. 14th century AD, missing the pin. The frame measures 26mm wide and is 22mm long, weighing 5.2g. The frame is thicker than many buckles, measuring 5mm in thickness in comparison with most measuring 2/3mm. The frame is plain and undecorated. Egan describes these style of buckles being used on shoes in the late 14th century, no.347 (1991, pg85) is of similar shape and material.

a probable Roman iron double spiked loop.It has been bent at right angles into an L-shape, with a loop, filled with corrosion at one terminal and the two arms terminating with spiked ends. The arms are separate from each other but corroded together. The object measures 57.36mm in length, from loop terminal to the right-angle bend, and is 21.12mm wide across the loop. The arms are 6.56mm and 6.84mm in width, and the object weighs 33g. Whilst it ressembles double spiked loops from Hatcheston (Blagg et al, 2004, nos 291 etc) it does seem to be deliberately bent in half, unlike the others…

An iron horseshoe dating from the post medieval or modern period. The shoe is 134.6mm long, 131.5mm wide and 16mm thick. It has a fuller (groove) on the ground surface in which the head of the nails would sit. This is characteristic of post-medieval and later shoes. The front of the toe is missing, so it is impossible to tell if there was a turn-up at the front. The shoe does not appear to have calkins (thickened areas at the ends of the shoe). It is somewhat corroded, which may explain its great weight of 612g. The shoe is also very wide, another feature that suggests a date in the se…

An iron tool which may be a chisel or pick. It has a head which is circular in section but the top is not flattened as would be expected from hammer blows. The end may be an ancient break. There are shoulders below the head where the tool changes to a rectangular section and starts to taper to a wide point. This end is also irregular and looks likely to be an old break. One face of the tapered end is very rough and there is a step at the top suggesting that the original surface may have flaked off. The tool is 69mm long, 33.3mm wide and 30.2mm thick. The blade is 32.2mm wide at the tap…

The band is 5mm thick and 11.6mm high making an oval which is 145.9mm long and 100.1mm wide. At each end of the oval is a projection vertically upwards which then bends outwards at a 90 degree angle. One projection is broken, but the other has a trilobed terminal. The wooden sole of the patten would have been attached to the top of these projections with nails. The iron part of the patten is 29.5mm high. The wooden sole, any part of the upper and the nails do …

The tip of an medieval iron arrowhead, or possibly medieval spearhead. Triangular shaped arrowhead with a central conical socket and partially surviving flat bevelled wings. Part of the socket, wings and any barbs on the wings are missing due to old breaks and corrosion. The socket extends deeply into the head, to within 2cm of the remaining point; this suggests the item is an arrowhead rather than a spearhead. Spearheads with sockets running into the blade are shown in the Museum of London Medieval Catalogue (p74: A12240, A1779, plate XVI:8-9) but the sockets on the spearheads, unli…

A large shoe buckle of the type made popular by the Comte d'Artois in the late 18th century. The buckle appears to be made of cut steel which is heavily corroded. The front has probably been japanned which appears to have protected it from corrosion to some extent. The frame is decorated with two large grooves running completely around the frame, separated by wide flat topped bands. The outer band is divided by a narrow grove. At the centre of each side is an oval design comprising two rings pellets surrounding a central oval pellet. A partial, corroded, steel spindle remains in place…

Incomplete iron spear. Only two fragments of the blade survive, and a fragment of what may be from the butt end of the spear, although it does not fit any known type. The two fragments represent the tip and the main body of the blade. Both sections are very corroded. The tip is neatly rounded at the terminal appearing as if it has been worn round rather than being broken at the tip. The blade is lozenge shaped in cross-section and leaf shaped in plan, and widens to the shoulders from where it quickly narrows again and forms a circular-sectioned shank. The third fragment is …

Possible medieval arrowhead or crossbow bolt; Cast iron projectile point of probable 13th –15th century date. It has a narrow point of square cross-section and a long tang of circular cross-section. The surface of the artefact is pitted with corrosion and is starting to flake away. This is reminiscent of the ‘bodkin’ type arrowheads which came into use in the 13th century, replacing the earlier, flat-bladed arrowheads due to their greater efficacy at piercing leather, mail and plate armour. However, the majority of these arrowheads were socketed with the tanged type being far …

A copper alloy and iron knife fragment. The fragment is part of the handle and is 46.2mm long, 14.6mm wide and 10.5mm thick. It consists of a heavily corroded iron tang which was probably flat making it a scale tang, and a copper alloy decorative handle fragment. The copper alloy piece is pentagonal in section and is tubular. It is more normal for the handle of a scale tang knife to be formed of two plates rather than one tubular piece. The iron tang project from both ends of the copper alloy piece because the handle is not complete. The copper alloy is decorated with incised lines for…

An incomplete wrought iron and cast copper alloy key of probable Roman date. The probable key comprises the heavily corroded iron stem and the incomplete copper alloy handle. In its current state it measures 35.5mm by 24mm by 23mm and weighs 19.4g. The handle is cuboid-shaped, with four equally-spaced protrusions from the face opposite the iron stem. These may be the stubs of two (or three) loops, forming a handle similar to an example from south-east Lincolnshire which features in Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Anitquity' (2001, p. 69, no. 522).

Iron mule shoe or iron fitting for the heel of a wooden clog or shoe sole. The shape of the shoe and its rectangular nail holes and nail resemble 'tongue' type horseshoes, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries (see Bailey, 1997, page 41). Clark (2004) illustrates a similar Type 4 'miniature horseshoe' on page 120, Fig.86, No.197, which is dated c.1270-1350, but was never used and 'would not function as a shoe cleat' (p.91). He discusses mule shoes on page 78, and concludes that mules were rarely shod in the Medieval period and that the shoe would be narrow and long with a length to …
