Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead-alloy object which is probably a leg from a metal vessel. No parallel could be found for this piece and a date of late medieval to post-medieval is tentatively suggested. The attachment, located at the top, consists of an irregularly shaped flat plate with rounded edges and a sub-circular rivet hole. The leg itself angles downwards from the attachment plate and is roughly ovoidal. Both the upper surface and the underside appear to have cast decoration. The upper surface bears a vertical ridge with three equally spaced, shorter transverse ridges along it; the underside has a t…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A bent and incomplete copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date. Read illustrates a similar artefact, which he describes as a sword-belt mount of possible 16th century date (2001; pp. 43, no. 371). However, the bottom element of this piece differs significantly from that of the Read example and may indicate that this piece served a different function. The object is of thin section and would orginally have been flat. It has a circular aperture flanked on either side by a three-lobed border. Immediately above and below this section is a narrower 'waisted' section, each containing the h…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy seal matrix of 14th century date (see P. Harvey and A. McGuinness; 1996; pp. 88). The back of the circular printing face tapers upwards into a damaged lug handle. The seal, when printed, contains the central image of a squirrel facing left and holding a nut. The legend reads: '*PRIVESV' ('I am private'). Both the subject matter and legend are common features of seals of this period, several similar pieces having been recorded on the PAS database. It measures 17.1mm in diameter, 9.1mm high and weighs 5.01g.

Just over half of a Double-loop trapezoidal buckle of suggested 17th century date (R. Whitehead; 1996; pp. 83). The surviving side of the frame is sub-trapezoidal in plan, the outer edges of the angled sides being slightly concave. The flat upper surface is decorated with a cast foliate pattern. The central axis bar is of square section and terminates at each end with a rounded knob, also decorated. The pin is wound once around the axis bar and comprises a piece of copper-alloy wire of semi-circular section. The point of the pin is missing. Both the decorated upper surface and the f…

A copper-alloy stirrup terminal of 11th century date. Several examples of this category of artefact are recorded on the PAS database (see, for example, SF-FEFD92). Williams illustrates a similar example in his Finds Research Group datasheet (No. 24; 1997; fig. 5). The object, which represents one of the two bottom corners of the stirrup, takes the form of a zoomorphic foot. The foot angles upwards from the flat base at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees. Evenly spaced around the rounded outer edge of the foot are three projecting toes. At the top of the outer face is a mould…

An incomplete copper-alloy Langton Down variant brooch of mid 1st century date (R. Hattatt; 1982; pp. 80). The much damaged head takes the form of a cylinder, which would originally have enclosed the now-missing spring. An unusual feature of this brooch is that there is a ninety degree angle between the top section of the bow and the vertical main section. A moulded transverse ridge marks the transition between the head and the top section of the bow and the latter element is also decorated with two less prominent transverse ridges. The vertical section of the bow has a longitudinal…

Worn and corroded Post-Medieval copper-alloy hooked mount of circa 16th century AD date. The top of the mount has a circular swelling, with a rivet hole, and then tapers into a bent tip. The body is roughly straight, with some irregularities, and there is a second rivet hole parallel with the top of the hook. A corroded copper-alloy jetton of French origin and late medieval date. No exact parallel could be found for the reverse design on this jetton but similar examples are illustrated by Mitchiner (1988; pp. 201) and it is doubtless a 15th century issue, probably struck during the reign of Charles VII (c. 1447-1461 AD). A hole has been pierced for later conversion into a pendant. The jetton measures 28.2mm in diameter, 0.7mm thick and weighs 2.01g.
