An interesting buckle plate consisting of 4 parts: 1. The principal part of the plate is formed by a strip of copper alloy bent in two with a gap at the fold, like that on a modern hairpin, to receive the buckle frame and pin (now both missing). Three tectangular notches have been cut into the folded edge; a central pin slot to locate the pin and a further two frame recesses cut into the corners to receive the buckle frame. The front of the plate is openwork with nine holes cut into it in three rows. The row nearest the fold consists of three circles, then in the centre is a row of…

A corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date, incomplete in as much as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface, the latter more shallowly; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal, almost triangular cross-section. Small traces of dark brown corrosion product on the pin bar suggest that it might have been made of iron. The buckle frame has corroded to a dark red-brown colour with a dustin…

An incomplete, fragment of a Medieval, cast, copper alloy, single loop oval buckle with ornate outer edge. This broken buckle probably had a narrowed offset strap bar which is now missing. A corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed two loops: one oval, the other with an angled outer edge. On one half of the rounded loop a straight projection implies that the buckle had not been filed down. The pin bar extends beyond the loops in knops of trapezoidal cross-section. The buckle is crudely bevelled internally and externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The buckle has some mid-green and grey covering over a red-brown metal. One can see that the buckle h…

A complete single-looped cast copper-alloy buckle probably of early-medieval date. The frame is of simple, oval form with a circular cross-section. The inner edge around which the pin is looped is flattened. The thick wire pin survives well with minimal pitting. The frame is retained within a simple, short plate formed of a folded rectangular sheet. This features a slot for the pin and a pair of rivet holes at the attachment end. The plate has broken at the strips either side of the pin. The lower half of the fold is abraded at one of these strips and one of the rivet holes. Two …
