A corroded and incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy plate brooch. The brooch is constructed from a lozenge-shaped, wavy-edged, plate measuring 15.9mm long, 30.5mm wide and 1.1mm thick. Along one side much of the plate is missing, probably due to post-depositional damage. Inset from the wavy-edge, and parallel with it, is a raised lozengiform (14.9mm across by 26mm long) centre-piece with a rimmed border. Contained within the central cell are the remains of red and white enamel insets, but insufficient remains to enable the original design to be discerned. On the reverse of the brooch…

A fragment of a copper alloy Roman 'dolphin' brooch, comprising the bow and the remains of a catchplate-the wings have broken away and been lost. The brooch has been decorated with a pair of grooves running down the centre of the bow. The object has suffered extensive corrosion, with some pitting and losses from the original surface. The brooch probably dates from the early Roman period (around AD 40-80, though Guy de la Bedoyere discusses the use of these brooches throughout the 1st and 2nd centuries (p.120).

Roman cast copper alloy lion derivative brooch. It is triangular in plan, with curved wings and a hook at the apex of the triangle, which would have secured and partially encased the sprung pin mechanism. The head has cast decoration in the form of a trapezoid. There is a slight concave depression after the head, and immediately below is a triangular projection protruding from the bow at a 45 degree angle. This projection apears to be three dimensional, possibly with a triangular cross section. There is a raised rib running from under the projection to the base of the bow, where it di…

Fragment of what is probably the foot from a Roman bow and fantail brooch. The fragment is flat, roughly oval in plan and with no original edges surviving. The surface is decorated with one large circular rim of reserve metal and one smaller below it. The fields between the circles contain blue-green coloured enamel. An incomplete linear fitting is visible on the reverse which is possibly the remains of a catchplate.

A broken and poorly preserved copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of first to second century date. The brooch is missing the lower part of its bow and its pin mechanism, which was probably sprung. The wings are hollow and semi-cylindrical in shape, and would have held the pin mechanism. Moulded decoration in the form of a rib runs down the centre of the bow. The brooch measures 25.43 mm long, 19.10 mm wide, 10.79 mm thick and weighs 5.2 grams.

An oval disc formed from cast copper alloy with a central setting, probably for a glass or semi-precious stone. There are traces of gilt on the surface and four circular holes piercing the outer edge. There is insufficient information on the rally record to determine if the object has evidence of an attachment pin on the reverse. Disc or plate brooches were in use in Roman Britain predominantly in the 2nd Century (Bedoyere, 1991, 121). Similar examples may be seen on this database, for example YORYM-F6A164 and SWYOR-3D4F28, though these are without the pierced rim. These holes ma…

A cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon S-brooch from the 6th century AD. It is a closed S shape in plan, with an integral catchplate and a hinge for the pin on the reverse. The front has two raised lateral ridges that follow the S shape from the top to the bottom of the brooch, creating three cells. The pin is missing, but was made of iron; iron corrosion is visible on the reverse at the hinge and catchplate. Many examples of this type are zoomorphic, however corrosion hides any evidence of this, if any, on the brooch. The brooch is in fair condition and is a light green colour. It me…

An incomplete enamelled copper-alloy T-shaped brooch dating to the early Roman period. The wings are cylindrical in cross-section and contain an axis bar for a hinged pin. The pin is missing. The bow is comma-shaped in profile and D-shaped in cross-section. At the top of the bow is a narrow crest. The centre of the bow is decorated with two rectangular cells. Each would have contained enamel however nothing remains in either cell. The foot is slightly foward facing. The catchplate is complete.

A broken and incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of the Hod Hill type, Hattatt's Class B (with side knobs/lugs). The head and therefore the pin are missing, but the rest of the brooch remains, surviving in good condition. The point below the head is narrowed with the brooch having broken at this weak point. Below this is a transverse ridge (W.: 8.85mm). Below this is the bow, a transverse rectangular plate with three transverse ridges with two grooves between. The uppermost ridge, at least, seems to be decorated with finely incised longitudinal nicks. To each side of the plate i…

A cast copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch fragment dating to the 6th century AD. The fragment is the central panel and two knops on the sides, as well as the hinge on the reverse. The central panel is trapezoidal in plan, and sub-rectangular in section. It has a central punched ring and dot design. It is recessed from the two side knops, which are round, with a flat reverse. A probable fragment of a copper alloy Anglo-Scandinavian disc brooch. The brooch has an openwork design, possibly zoomorphic, and retains a stub of the original fastening. Most of the brooch, along with the hinge and pin fastening, have broken away and been lost. A complete example can be seen on this database (SWYOR-114BB0), though our brooch fragment lacks the fine moulded surface detail which has probably been lost as a result of surface corrosion.

Head and upper part of the bow of a Roman cast copper-alloy initial T-shaped brooch with hinged pin dating to c. AD 60-100. The brooch head has open-ended cylindrical wings, 26.5mm wide, which contain a probably copper alloy axis bar for the hinge. One wing is broken open on the front revealing a mass of white material, probably solder, and just the tip of the axis bar but as this is covered in the solder it is difficult to be sure what material it is made of. The complete wing is decorated with a pair of incised transverse lines near the end. There is a large transverse slot throug…
