Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper alloy late Early Medieval buckle frame, (11th century). It is D-shaped, with a thickened outside edge which is faceted. There are animal-head terminals facing each other to either side of the bar, which is narrowed and circular in section. They have dots for eyes and ears which are flattened against the head; they hold the bar in their mouths. The metalwork is pitted and patinated and any other decorative detail is now lost. Along the centre of the ridge on the outside edge there is a short strip of oblique grooves forming cable decoration. A pin rest is visible on one side o…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A medieval finger-ring formed of a slightly convex hoop decorated on the exterior surface with a series of rounded indentations, probably intended to represent tears. There is no bezel. The hoop is slightly bent and there is a large crack which has completely fractured the hoop. Inside the hoop is an inscription that reads, in black-letter script, of loyallt is ioye (of loyalty is joy). The crack runs between the last L and the T of loyallt. The ring is gold, and the use of black-letter dates it to the fifteenth century. Dimensions: length 15 mm, width 14 mm. Tears are known to …

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy Roman brooch, Colchester derivative with rear hook type. Part of the semi-cylindrical wings survive along with the rearward facing hook and upper bow. The metalwork is corroded and the surfaces are pitted, obscuring any decoration apart from a suggestion of moulding on both wings. The brooch fragment measures 16.28mm in surviving width and is 27.42m in length. The bow has a flat back, and the brooch weighs 4.32g. A date range of 40-70 AD is suggested in Blagg et al, 2004, p.93, for this type of brooch.

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy Medieval harness pendant. It is incomplete due to old breaks, and is missing its loop for suspension and the knops which give this type of pendant an octofoil shape. It is a flat disc bearing traces of incised line decoration forming part of a star near the centre. All around the edges is a mass of tiny punched circles, any intended pattern or clustering being undiscernible due to wear and patination of the metal. There are traces of gilding on this surface. The pendant is approximatley oval, and measures 38.53mm by 35.96mm. It weighs 5.65g. Similar pendants from Norf…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman disc brooch. It is missing its outer edges, pin, outer edges of the catchplate and some of the enamelling due to old breaks. The brooch is flat, circular in form with enamelled decoration on the front face of the plate. This comprises a central recessed field in the form of a six pointed star that has a projecting central circle that possibly has traces of an added white metal coating. The star shaped field is now missing any enamel it may originally have had due to old breaks. Surrounding the star are six evenly spaced triangular enamelled fields…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman finger ring. The back of the hoop and the setting are missing due to old breaks, and the edges of the hoop show signs of post-depositional damage and corrosion. The hoop is flattened, oval shaped in section and expands horizontally at the shoulders towards the flattened bezel. At the centre of the bezel the ring has been slightly flattened and bent probably as a result of post-depositional damage. The bezel itself is oval shaped in form with an oval shaped recess that would presumably originally have held in place a setting that is now missing due…
