A flint multi functional tool, a burin and cutting edge formed on a primary flake of tan coloured flint. The dorsal face is covered with cortex except where the working has removed it at the distal end. The right side has semi abrupt retouch along it to form a knife. Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two stone cobbles which are heat altered and shaped. Both are rounded cobbles which have one face worn or shaped to be flat. One stone is complete. It is dense and well consolidated with many mica particles. Originally a yellow grey colour, pink discolouration suggests heating. The flat surface looks to have been pecked rather than cut or ground. It is 80.52mm long, 60.4mm wide and 33.14mm thick. It weighs 222g. The other stone is broken with a jagged, irregular break. One face is rounded, the original cobble, and the other is ground flat. The stone is dense and well consoli…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy artefact, a decorative mount probably from the edge of a Late Iron Age tankard. The object is a U shaped fitting which is semi tubular. The main part of the tube is bulbous, with a double collar at each end. The artefact has a dark grey patina with pitting which is light green. In style it is similar to SWYOR-09BA81, SWYOR-D271D5, SWYOR-5C5FB5 and SWYOR D20FD1. The function of these objects is not absolutely certain. A similar object can be seen on page 282 of the Dragonby Catalogue (May, 1996), number 117, but unfortunately this is catalogued as a Miscellaneou…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A base from a Roman ceramic vessel; probably a colour coated beaker dating from the later Roman period. Only the base of the vessel survives. It is narrow at just 40.97mm diameter. It tapers to 35.9mm at the narrowest point and then the walls flare. The fabric is white to light grey with a colour coating of dark grey on the outer face, and of grey with red tones on the inside. The breaks are fine with a smooth feel and the inclusions are mainly flecks of black and orange-red (perhaps grog). The vessel seems similar to Castor Ware (also known as Nene Valley Ware) narrow mouthed beakers…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast lead alloy seal matrix of Medieval date. It has no suspension loop or lug, and there are no apparent breaks. The edges are rounded and worn. The seal is pointed-oval in form, trapezoidal in section and with moulded decoration on the back face. This matrix is unusual in that it seems to have no trace of any legend or decorative motif on the front face, suggesting it may be a blank that has yet to be carved. The moulded design is of a plant with two leaves near the base, two possible flowers, one at each side, and three buds at the top. This design could also be …

A copper alloy Early Medieval strap end of Thomas Class A dating from 750 - 950 AD. It is probably a Trewhiddle type, but the plate is worn and the decoration is no longer visible. There is a worn zoomorphic snout at the closed end with very prominent ears emphasised by deep circular depressions. At the attachment end, the strap end splits into two plates leaving a space for the strap. There are two rivet holes in the attachment end. See FRG Datasheet 32.

A copper alloy Bronze Age arrowhead which is flat and barbed and tanged. One barb is missing and the edges are damaged. It has a rib along the centre on both faces, giving it a slightly lozenge shaped section. The end of the barb is rounded, as is the end of the surviving tang, though it is not clear if it is complete. The barb is half as long as the tang. The notch between the barb and tang has straight sides and a rounded end, but overall is fairly square and narrow (3.67mm wide at the widest point). The surface has a smooth golden brown patina which is well developed. There is some…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy cloth seal probably dating from the reign of James I, 1603 - 1625. It is one disc of a probable four disc seal, with broken tabs which would have linked the discs at each end, and a damaged rivet on the reverse. The rivet would have been passed through a hole in one of the other discs before being stamped to press it together and seal it. The only design visible is on the front of the surviving disc. It has a crowned thistle flanked at the top by the letter I (R) (standing for James Rex?) and a legend which reads COLCH[ESTE]R. Compare to NMS-631284 which cites Egan (1994)…

One loop from a cast copper alloy swivel for a strap fitting (such as a leash), dating from the medieval period. The loop is D-shaped in plan with the straight edge thickened to accommodate an aperture through the wall of the loop. The opening is now filled with corroded concretion, but would have held a pin which would have fixed this loop to another, allowing them both to rotate freely (see other examples on this database for comparison, such as YORYM-7DFA97). The shoulders of the swivel loop are very worn and have no visible decoration except a ridged collar flanking the opening …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy badge or pilgrim souvenir of probable Late Medieval date. The badge is in the form of a robed figure but many of the details are obscured by damage and wear. The figure faces forwards and appears to have long hair which flows over the shoulders, or may be wearing a hood. the face is indistinct. The figure's right arm is indistinct, and the left arm is broken just below the elbow. It would probably have projected to the side. The figure has a clear rope like belt but details of the lower body are not so clear. The figure may be keeling, or standing. A base across the botto…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy spearhead dating from the Middle or Late Bronze Age, about 1550 – 800 BC. The fragment consists of only the very tip of the spearhead, but it is in excellent condition. It has a narrow and slender tip with a pronounced midrib on both faces which is triangular in section. The tapering wings have slight edge bevels. The wing edges are still sharp, the the rib is also angular enough to feel crisp, and to form a sharp point. The break at the wider end is patinated. The part that survives has straight sides. The patina is almost black, and is smooth and …
