An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill type (flat wing ends type, Severn Valley, northern Midlands and Marches), cf. Mackreth 2011, 4.j. Plate 49. The wings are semi-cylindrical and terminate with a perforated wing cap, of which one is incomplete. The axis bar, spring and pin are all missing. The wings are undecorated. The bowhead is hump-like in profile, and has a small hook at the centre of the upper edge of the wings. A Post Medieval cast lead or lead alloy cloth seal. It is composed of two discs over laying each other and connected by an integral ribbon. One disc has a stud, the other a hole through which the stud is positioned. One face has a beaded border within which there is a plant with flowers and has a 'V' within. The reverse disc has a prominent '21' stamped off-centre. The surface of the seal is oxidised forming a mottled cream colour. It measures 24.68mm long, 19.55mm wide and 4.36mm thick. It weighs 7.5g. The upper face of the button is flat and decorated with a low-relief square border with a '+' and 'X' over laying each other. The 'X' is decorated with a wiggly line. The arms are of open semi-circular cross section formed around a copper alloy rod and coil which is contiguous with the pin, now mostly missing. The catchplate is pierced by a 2mm hole. The brooch is in poor, corroded condition, is 44mm long, 32mm wide, 20mm thick and weighs 13.49g.
