Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An iron cannon ball of post-medieval (probably English Civil War) date (1600-1700AD). The cannonball is sub-spherical with a diameter of c. 4.3 inches [4 inches 3/16]) or 110mm. It weighs 6.8 kilograms (15lbs). It is made of iron which has been presumably cast - although the seams cannot be seen. The ball is of a mid-brown orange colour with areas of flaking and active corrosion. The cannon ball is in fairly good condition; however, there are a number of areas which exhibit pitting, denting, and grazes. This damage is as a direct result of the exposing of casting flaws by corrosion wh…

Object type: BUCKLE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron single loop buckle, probably of Medieval date. The buckle is oval-shaped with a straight slightly narrowed strap bar. In cross-section the frame is rectangular and the strap bar is circular. The pin is also iron and has survived well, it has the form of a long tapering triangle with the pointed end resting on the frame loop and the other wider end looped all the way around the strap bar. Egan in his section on buckles in Clarkes book; The Medieval Horse and its Equpment 1150-1450 (2004) p55, infers that larger buckles from the Medieval period such as this one are likely to be mor…

Iron spearhead. Wrought iron with a butted seam straight socket and a flat leaf shaped blade with shoulders set at circa 45 degrees to the socket; the thickness of the blade diminishes rapidly from where it joins the socket, and it is only circa 3mm thick at its surviving end. Heavily corroded and lightly bent. The mass indicates almost all metal formerly present has been lost, and what remains is mainly rust. The form of the object appears to resemble a spearhead, and the finder kindly observes that it is close to that of Late Iron Age examples on display at the North Lincolnshi…

Iron knife. Wrought iron whittle tang knife, with a broad V section blade with a curved back and blade, the latter feature probably the result of sharpening which has left a pointed end slightly upturned. The rectangular section tang is circa 40mm long and the blade circa 60mm long. The excellent condition, and lack of corrosion must suggest that this object has recently been disturbed from a sealed and probably anaerobic context. Suggested date: Roman, 40-400. Length: 103.7mm, Width: 18.4mm, Thickness (at middle of blade): 5.5mm, Weight: 15.26gms.

Iron possible trowel. Tanged tool with a flat sub-triangular blade. The tang is tapered, 54mm long, and of square section; though this might arise from corrosion it also seems to be the section of the object where the current surface remains intact. Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 40-400. Length: 111.4mm, Width: 71.2mm, Thickness: 6.7mm, Weight: 53.40gms.

An irregular spherical shaped piece of iron shot / small cannon ball probably of post medieval / civil war date (1600-1700 AD). The ball is of a mid-brown purplish colour with small areas of flaking and active corrosion. It has been consolidated by applying hammerite - or similar rust proof surface. The shot is in fairly good condition and with no obvious dents or grazes which might suggest use. The size is small either suggesting it was used as grape shot or that it was for a small hand-held cannon (possibly a rabinet (1inch bore) or serpentine (1 ½ inch bore). The diameter of the b…

A Medieval iron mount probably dating to the 14th century. The mount is circular with a single, tapering, pointed shank. The front surface of the mount is decorated with a slightly raised cross which creates a faceted appearance. A similar object is illustrated in Egan & Pritchard (1991:242 no. 1301), also made of iron but decorated with a rosette pattern. The authors note that this example is rather robust compared with other dress mounts and that these may be nails with decorated heads and the points broken off. The published example comes from a context dating c. AD1330 - 1…

An incomplete Post-Medieval (1500-1600) iron rowel spur, consisting of one incomplete arm, the neck and the rowel. It measures c.78mm in length and weighs 17.07g. The arm is triangular in cross-section, with a slanting top edge and no edge at the bottom. It narrows from 8.32mm wide at the neck to 4.32mm at the break. There is 'rope effect' moulded decoration on the surviving arm, flanking the neck (three diagonal mouldings shortening in length). The neck has a double collar before splitting into two arms, which curve downwards and hold the six-pointed rowel between them.

An Incomplete, Roman, Iron spearhead, AD.43-450. Object comprises the blade and part of the socket of the spearhead. The blade is narrow and triangular with a rounded tip. The blade has short gently tapering shoulders to the waist from which the socket emerges. The socket itself is incomplete and there is little diagnostic detail that could be gained from it. The spearhead is a narrow 'diamond' in cross-section across the blade. The surface is heavily corroded and there is significant delamination occurring to the metal. The object has a bend in the blade, this seems to have occurr…

A single cast iron shot, spherical in shape, with a pitted & corroded surface, The shot, including corrosion, is just over an inch in diameter, or 28mm, which could have been used by the smaller artillery pieces but equally could have been used as grape shot for some of the larger cannons. In the 17th century, during the Civil War, any iron object could be used as an effective anti-personnel round, and there was no uniform size and weight for grape shot until the 19th century, so dating these items precisely is difficult. this item has been dated 1600-1800. A complete cast iron cannon ball, of 19th Century dating. The cannon ball is spherical in shape. It has a maximum diameter of 105 mm (4.1 inches) and weighs 4 kg (2.2 lbs). The circumference is approximately 32 cm (12.5 inches). The cannon ball is a mid to dark brown colour, with an even surface patina. Some traces of iron corrosion (rust) are present on the surface, but no lamination of the surface has occurred. The dimensions and weight would suggest that this cannon ball is a British 9 pdr. As the name suggests these weighed 9 pounds when first manufactured and were fired fro…

A iron whittle tang knife of Early Medieval date. It is back form A using the typology discussed in Life and Economy in Early Medieval Flixborough (originally from The study of Anglo-Scandinavian knives from 16-22 Coppergate, Ottaway, 1984). This can be described as an angle back knife. The blade is triangular in section and has a rounded shoulder where it tapers to the tang. The tang is rectnagular in section and tapers from the blade to the tip. The knife is rusty and the organic handle is missing. Form A knives date from the 7th - 12th centuries, but were most common in the 8th - e…
