Iron spearhead. Wrought iron with a butted seam straight socket and a flat leaf shaped blade with shoulders set at circa 45 degrees to the socket; the thickness of the blade diminishes rapidly from where it joins the socket, and it is only circa 3mm thick at its surviving end. Heavily corroded and lightly bent. The mass indicates almost all metal formerly present has been lost, and what remains is mainly rust.
The form of the object appears to resemble a spearhead, and the finder kindly observes that it is close to that of Late Iron Age examples on display at the North Lincolnshi…

An Incomplete, Roman, Iron spearhead, AD.43-450. Object comprises the blade and part of the socket of the spearhead. The blade is narrow and triangular with a rounded tip. The blade has short gently tapering shoulders to the waist from which the socket emerges. The socket itself is incomplete and there is little diagnostic detail that could be gained from it. The spearhead is a narrow 'diamond' in cross-section across the blade.
The surface is heavily corroded and there is significant delamination occurring to the metal. The object has a bend in the blade, this seems to have occurr…

Iron spearhead with an elongated leaf shaped blade which appears to narrow then widen again to broad projecting points (ricasso) above the socket. The blade is pointed oval in section with a slightly thickened centre but no midrib. It is 35.5mm wide at the widest point and 26.6mm at the narrowest section above the projecting points. This narrow section is damaged but does appear to be an original feature although the alternative, that it originally continued straight before curving out to the projecting points, cannot be ruled out. It is 30.8mm across at the points and 3.5mm thick. Th…

An iron spear head dating from the 7th - 9th century. It is angular and has a split socket. It probably fits into Swanton Group E2 which was in use for a long time. The blade is kite shaped with short concave upper sides. It is lozenge shaped in section. The socket has broken into two pieces. It still contains mineralised wood and is U shaped. The socket is 27.2mm wide and 18mm thick at its widest point. The socket is about 95mm long. The neck between the socket and blade is oval in section, thicker than it is wide and is decorated with at least three circumferential moulded ridges ne…

Iron spearhead of Swanton's Series L. Angular blade, probably corrugated, socket split, now truncated, stump 15.0mm diameter. Blade flame-shaped tapering sharply from maximum width. Down one side of the blade is a deep narrow ridge/step which is off-set to one side. The other side of the blade is obscured but it is likely that this bore a corresponding off-set groove and that the blade was corrugated with a Z section. Some recent damage to socket and the tip of the blade which is bent.

An incomplete, iron spearhead of probable Roman date, c. 50-410.
The spear is very corroded, with considerable expansion through the corrosion process, distorting the shape and measurements. The majority of the blade is missing, but the remaining elements indicated a leaf-shaped blade on a socket. The corrosion is such that the shoulders of the blade appear to merge with the top of the socket, and no edge remains.
