Iron knife. Wrought iron whittle tang knife, with a broad V section blade with a curved back and blade, the latter feature probably the result of sharpening which has left a pointed end slightly upturned. The rectangular section tang is circa 40mm long and the blade circa 60mm long. The excellent condition, and lack of corrosion must suggest that this object has recently been disturbed from a sealed and probably anaerobic context. Suggested date: Roman, 40-400. Length: 103.7mm, Width: 18.4mm, Thickness (at middle of blade): 5.5mm, Weight: 15.26gms.

A iron whittle tang knife of Early Medieval date. It is back form A using the typology discussed in Life and Economy in Early Medieval Flixborough (originally from The study of Anglo-Scandinavian knives from 16-22 Coppergate, Ottaway, 1984). This can be described as an angle back knife. The blade is triangular in section and has a rounded shoulder where it tapers to the tang. The tang is rectnagular in section and tapers from the blade to the tip. The knife is rusty and the organic handle is missing. Form A knives date from the 7th - 12th centuries, but were most common in the 8th - e…

A iron whittle tang knife of probable Early Medieval date. It is probably back form E using the typology discussed in Life and Economy in Early Medieval Flixborough (originally from The study of Anglo-Scandinavian knives from 16-22 Coppergate, Ottaway, 1984). This can be described as a knife with a straight back. The tip of the blade is rounded and the cutting edge is unusually thick (perhaps suggesting the tool was a file or other implement rather than a knife). The blade tapers from the shoulder to the tang which is rectangular in section and tapers from the blade to the tip. The kn…

Incomplete cast iron knife with a blade that is semi-circular in plan, corroded to an oblong shape, and a whittle tang. The upper edge of the blade is bi-convex, but also worn, and varies from about 6 mm to 4 mm in thickness, and the cutting edge is straight and was originally about 4 mm thick but thins in places to about 3 mm, where more of the original surface has corroded away. The end of the blade is broken and jagged, but seems to be curving around towards the straight edge. The opposite end of the blade tapers to form angular shoulders, about 34 mm in width to meet the neck of t…

An incomplete Post Medieval iron scale tang knife probably dating to the 18th century. The knife has a 'pistol grip' handle which suggests an 18th century date. There are four rivets along the handle securing the handle to the scale tang. The knife is single-edged and parallel-sided and the tip is broken and missing. The tip has been shaped so that the knife can continue to be used. Similar knives are illustrated on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database - SUR-552EC8 and SWYOR-04E824, although the second example is a folding knife. Dimensions: length: 139.82mm; width: 16.99…

An incomplete Medieval iron knife dating late 13th - 15th century. This single-edged knife has a whittle tang and the blade has a triangular cross-section. Only a small section of the blade and the tang are surviving; the end of the blade is broken and missing. There may be a maker's mark stamped into the blade on the left hand side near the back of the blade, at the tang end. The corrosion is obscuring the detail but the stamp may be circular and similar to nos 51, 104, 164, 176 (Cowgill, de Neergaard & Griffiths 1987:21) which are either flowers or stars. An iron probable knife of Post Medieval to modern date. It has a whittle tang which is square in section and tapers from a square stop to the broken end. Between the stop and the blade is a thin neck of rectangular section which then flares to form the shoulders of the blade. The end of the blade is broken and rounded. It is not certain whether this is a knife or another tanged tool, though it does not appear to be a chisel. The iron is very delicate and is flaking. The style of tang and tapering square stop can be seen on 17th century tools such as 789 (a graver) on page 149 of Egan 2005.

An incomplete Post Medieval to Modern iron knife. The knife has a complete scale tang with a, now flattened, round terminal. There are two in-situ rivets through the tang, and a hole for a third, which would have held the scales in place. The scales are no longer present. The tang and the blade are integrally attached by a short solid bolster. The blade itself is broken, so the true length of the knife is uncertain. None of the remaining iron knife is decorated. Scale tang knifes were made from the late medieval period onwards, and the lack of decoration or maker's mark on this ex…
