An incomplete, iron strip brooch of Late Iron Age - Early Roman date. The top of the brooch rolls back to form a cylinder which appears to have a slot in the centre at the rear for the pin, most of which remains. The whole of the artefact is heavily encrusted with corrosion obscuring any detail. The bow is truncated resulting in the loss of the catchplate. Suggested date 25 - 60AD. Similar to PAS record GLO-205D77.

A Medieval iron mount probably dating to the 14th century. The mount is circular with a single, tapering, pointed shank. The front surface of the mount is decorated with a slightly raised cross which creates a faceted appearance. A similar object is illustrated in Egan & Pritchard (1991:242 no. 1301), also made of iron but decorated with a rosette pattern. The authors note that this example is rather robust compared with other dress mounts and that these may be nails with decorated heads and the points broken off. The published example comes from a context dating c. AD1330 - 1…

Small Metal block likely a DIe with circular insert on top, dating from 1800-1900. Description: The Block Has a design on all the outer part and also in the the Circular insert. In this circular insert, there is a visible pattern/scene with letters/numbers around the outer part of the circular. The scene appears as either a profile or maybe 2-3 figures standing. The Circular insert measures approximately 13mm in diameter, approximately 4mm in depth. An almost complete iron patten dating from the Post Medieval period. The hoop is made from a band of iron standing on its side and bent into an oval loop. Although now corroded, and with large amounts of ferrous oxide adhering to it in the form of a light brown crust, the key features of the patten are still discernible. The oval frame has a uniform thickness and width throughout, and both protruding platforms survive to some extent. There are surviving iron rivets in the more complete platform, where the patten would have been attached to a wooden upper, or a leather strap to …

An incomplete wrought iron knife. It has a cylindrical collar or 'bolster' at its mid point separating blade and tang. From here the blade projects to an old break, its broken tip slightly twisted; the break slopes up from the cutting edge to the back of the blade. The tang is rectangular in section, and tapers slightly towards its tip. The knife measures 89.4mm in length, has a width of 20.0mm, a thickness of 23.2mm,and weighs 20.3g. The existing metalwork is in fair condition. The bolster was introduced in the mid 16th century (Moore 1999, 296) in place of separate shoulder plate…

An incomplete post-medieval knife made from wrought iron, with a tapering tang and thickened 'bolster' or collar between blade and tang. Little of the blade remains due to old breaks. The bolster is circular in cross-section at its junction with the tang, then tapers on either side into the blade, with a triangular facet on either side. The top and bottom edges of the bolster do not taper. The tang is probably near to its original length, is circular in section where it adjoins the bolster, and then rectangular, tapering along its length to its end. The surviving object measures 80…

A fragment of an early-medieval or medieval iron padlock, circa 950-1500 AD. The object is part of the bolt, and represents a thick circular end plate with the riveted ends of three springs (the internal locking mechanism) on its external surface. Short stubs from the spines of two of the springs remain on the inner surface, together with a scar from the third. The spines appear to have been thick short rectangles in cross-section, two set in line with each other and the third perhaps perpendicular. The fragment measures 35.4mm in diameter, is 6.5mm in thickness ,and weighs 52.0g. The…

A fragment of an early-medieval or medieval iron padlock, circa 950 AD-1500 AD. The fragment represents the bolt, and has an irregular end-plate. End-plates from these padlock bolts are normally circular, but this has two straight edges joined by a curve, and at least one of the straight edges is thickened as if crushed or broken. Three ends of the springs (the internal mechanism which locks the padlock) protrude from its outer surface where they were riveted through the end-plate. On its inner surface, two short lengths of the spring arms (or 'spines') remain. Although both are b…

An incomplete early-medieval or medieval iron padlock, circa 950-1500 AD. The part surviving is known as the 'bolt', and it has one circular end with part of the inner spring mechanism riveted through it in three places. There are three short bars (known as 'spines') on the inner side, one bent and distorted, the other two parallel to each other and holding the remains of springs between them. Each spine would have had two springs, and two between the better-surviving spines survive to form a V shape. The ends of the spines are visible as rounded bumps on the other side of the end pla…

An almost-complete post-medieval iron key of 16th or 17th century date. The oval bow is broken and missing a small part of its lower edge, but retains its distinctive shape with two internal projections. The stem is cylindrical, at its thickest at the bow end, until a point where there is a double collar, and then it narrows in section to the bit. The bit is simple in design, a rectangle with no obvious clefts but with its lower edge angled or slightly thickened to form a flange. The end of the stem appears solid and is in line with the end of the bit. The key measures 80.0mm in lengt…

A complete Medieval iron key, now quite corroded and with some metal missing. The bow is oval, the stem short and square in cross-section, and the bit is rectangular, with a cleft cut in the lower part of the rear edge (towards the bow) and another cleft cut into the upper part of the front edge. This upper cleft creates a division between the bit and the end of the stem, which does not extend quite as far as the end of the bit; it is probably broken off short. Existing measurements in its corroded condition are: overall length 47.8mm, thickness of stem 6.2mm, the bit measures 18.8…

An incomplete medieval iron rowel spur. The piece represents approximately 90% of one side, and 45% of the other, and although corroded is in relatively good condition. The longer side curves down around the ankle and up again. It has three evenly spaced, perforated circular expansions along its length, and the tightest part of the curve is well towards the front, just behind the first perforated lobe. Between the circular lobes the side is narrower, and where best preserved appears to have had a trapezoidal cross-section with bevelled edges. There is a single similar circular lobe su…
