Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy double looped buckle dating from the medieval period. The buckle has an integrally cast central strap bar but the pin is now missing. It is likely that the pin was made of iron as suggested by a large mass of iron corrosion on the central bar. This is a common type of buckle, often referred to as a 'spectacle' buckle, and dates from the period c. AD 1350-1700.

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment from a cast copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon Great Square-headed Brooch, dating from the early to mid-6th century AD. The fragment is one of the arms of the brooch, is gilded and is decorated with chip-carving in Salin's Style I. There are disjointed animal parts such as legs and bodies which are distinguishable and possibly a animal or predatory bird's head. The reverse is plain. Although the break is worn it does not appear to be ancient, suggesting that it may have happened during ploughing.

An unusually large and chunky Neolithic arrowhead dating from c. 4000 - 2100 BC. The arrowhead was the cause of consideration by Alison Roberts (Ashmolean Museum) and Prof. Nick Barton (Institute of Archaeology), and thanks are given for their comments, which follow: 'The flint appears at first to be of considerable age, however it is too small to be of Upper Palaeolithic origin, but is not quite right for the Neolithic period either. There are large laurel-leaf arrowheads of the Neolithic that have been found in East Anglia, so it is probably better to consider this as a Neolithic…
