A black chert scraper. Late mesolithic to early neolithic in date. The chert is the typical chert used for lithic tool production in the Marles Wood area. It has a 'warty' texture as opposed to the smoother, more glassy texture of the best quality Boulsworth chert. Length 32mm, width 25mm, depth 6mm, weighs 6.45g. A number of chert lithic items, & a few flint ones, have also been found in the vicinity. John Hallam directed a dig in the area some time ago. There is an account of the excavation in David Barrowclough's book "Prehistoric Lancashire".

A stone perforated object of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The artefact has been made from a light greyish-brown quartzite pebble and is sub-oval in plan, with a lenticular cross section. The extent to which this form is natural (i.e. river worn), or has been achieved through deliberate grinding, is uncertain. The surfaces bear several shallow scratches, some of which may be contemporary with the production of the piece, others possibly being the result of post-depositional damage. Near the centre point of each of the two convex surfaces there is a circular depression, the…

Flint blade like flake of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and has a crested (triangular shaped) cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are both present. The external edges have been retouched and an irregular removal is present on one edge- the area around this is retouched possibly suggesting the removal shape had a specific use. The blade is a mid brown grey colour. It measures: 19.4mm in length, 14.4mm width, is 3.9mm thick and weighs 0.72 grams.
