A fragment of cast copper-alloy metal working debris. It is rectangular in form, D-shaped in section and terminates at both ends in old breaks. Although this fragment has a relatively uniform shape it does not appear to have been finished as a complete object. It is possible that it is a fragment from a larger object that has been subject to damage and/or re-use, but it seems most likely that…

A sheet copper alloy sword pommel, probably dating to the early-medieval period. The pommel is made from one sheet of copper alloy that has been folded from a flat rectangular base up and over into triangular profiled pommel with a rectangular cross section. The pommel is filled with a lead alloy substance, giving the object quite some weight for its size. The folds of the pommel do not quite touch each other and the lead infill has leached out. Through the centre of the pommel is the remains of an iron rivet or pin; possibly the remains of the tang but with a small diameter. Although…

A fragment of a stoneware vessel, probably a jug, with moulded decoration. The decoration comprises part of the beard from a bearded male face above a bordered cartouche containing script. The letters may be nonesense, and seem to be a retrograde E followed by W T I. The fragment comes from a type of stoneware vessel known as a Bartmann or Bellarmine jug, the bearded face thought to be lampooning Cardinal Bellarmine (1542-1621), and dates from the post-medieval period (1600-1750). The outer surface is dark brown which has been salt-glazed, producing the mottled effect. The interior i…
