Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed two loops: one oval, the other with an angled outer edge. On one half of the rounded loop a straight projection implies that the buckle had not been filed down. The pin bar extends beyond the loops in knops of trapezoidal cross-section. The buckle is crudely bevelled internally and externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The buckle has some mid-green and grey covering over a red-brown metal. One can see that the buckle h…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete single-looped cast copper-alloy buckle probably of early-medieval date. The frame is of simple, oval form with a circular cross-section. The inner edge around which the pin is looped is flattened. The thick wire pin survives well with minimal pitting. The frame is retained within a simple, short plate formed of a folded rectangular sheet. This features a slot for the pin and a pair of rivet holes at the attachment end. The plate has broken at the strips either side of the pin. The lower half of the fold is abraded at one of these strips and one of the rivet holes. Two …

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This piece is made on a concave flake. The concave ventral face has a bulb and slight retouch at the proximal left margin. The dorsal face is rough and pitted. This pasty shaped piece has a flattened left margin with a long flake removal or it has been snapped. The distal end and right margin has abrupt retouch to create a scraper. It is made from a clerical grey flint with light grey mottling. It was probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is difficult to confirm from its tertiary cortex. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar tool on Page 133 Fig 58 No L124, which he…

An incomplete Medieval-Post Medieval cast copper alloy Cauldron leg, circa AD1250 - AD1700. An attempt has been made in antiquity to rejoin the leg to the Cauldron, by applying a coat of molten metal to the two broken ends. This proved unsuccessful and the lower part of the old leg, which has traces of a hardened black substance protrudes from the top of yet another break. The old leg also shows through at the instep, and the underside of the foot, by virtue of its blackened surface. One corner of the foot has broken off in antiquity. The piece measures 37.9mm in length, 28.0mm width,…

An incomplete Medieval-Post Medieval cast copper alloy Cauldron leg, circa AD1250 - AD1700. The broken leg is "D" shaped in section, and from its foot a single prominent toe splays out slightly towards the right. There is a breakage point suggesting the loss of a second toe in antiquity. The piece shows fire damage up one side of the leg in the form of a bubbled surface and is approximately 50% covered in a hardened black pitch-like substance. Its measurements are: length 37.4mm, width 25.2mm, thickness 17.3mm and weight 91.3g. It has a worn condition.
