Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A worn lead cloth seal of Post-Medieval date. It is formed from two flat discs of equal size held together by a short integral rectangular connecting strip at the top and an integral central rivet. Disc 1 is extremely worn and if it once carried any stamp or legend these are now entirely illegible. The front face of disc 2 is pierced at its centre by the rivet, which is flattened and sub-oval shaped in form. This face appears to have a stamp comprising an uncertain central motif surrounded by a legend within a border of pellets. The legend is mostly illegible, but what does survive app…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast lead disc brooch, probably of Early-Medieval or Medieval date. It is missing part of the integral lug, catchplate and pin due to old breaks. The brooch is flat, circular in form and has moulded decoration on the front face. This comprises a cross formed from two pairs of parallel lines, creating a square positioned slightly off-centre on the front face where they transect one another. In each quadrant of the cross is moulded decoration that may have originally been intended to represent lettering, although this is uncertain and may simply be decorative. The back face is flat an…

Cast lead circular double faced token. The token has a raised design of a capital letters WT on one side, the other side has a raised cinquefoil (five petal flower). There are several holes in the centre where the lead has not completely filled the mould. It is 21.1mm in diameter, 1.6mm thick and weighs 3.2 grams. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally, they are therefore hard to date precisely but those with initials are thought to be Post Medieval in date (1500-1850 AD).

Cast double faced circular lead token. The token is decorated on one side with a raised grid of lines crossing at right angles; the reverse also has several raised vertical and horizontal line although the design is interrupted by a casting flaw and is less clear. The token is 19.9mm in diameter, 3.1mm thick and weighs 7.1 grams. Tokens with simple designs were very easy to make, had a range of uses and continued in use for a long period, therefore a wide range of c. 1250-1850AD is given.
