A very worn mid 14th-century gold medieval half-noble of Edward III, London mint, probably fourth coinage, Pre-Treaty period, Series C/A mule (obverse of C, reverse of A) dating to 1351-1352 AD (North 1145). This coin has been seemingly straigtened by the finder; it may have been bent in half resulting in losses around the centre of the flan. The coin has also received some circumferential losses and some clipping.

A gold Roman finger ring. The finger ring has a circular hoop which has been bent out of shape. The hoop has a circular section, but the edges have been slightly squared off. The hoops section widens to the shoulders, where it is decorated on either side of the bezel with two chevron-like incised markings. There is no tip to the chevrons. The bezel is oval, with tall sides and a flattened rim. The reverse of the bezel is flat with a flat ridge running horizontally across its surface, this ridge continues behind the shoulders. A fragment of gold sheet, the remains of a personal ornament of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500 BC-c. 2200 BC). The object is a type known as a basket-shaped ornament. Treasure case no. 2009 T741. The plaque would have originally been U-shaped in cross-section with a tang soldered mid-way along its longitudinal length for attachment. In plan, it has a curving outline and when complete, would have formed an elongated oval shape. Following the outline are two parallel lines of finely punched dots. There are also similar dots punched from the opposite side. These, how…

TREASURE CASE : 2004 T292 Late 9th- early 10th century Anglo-Saxon gold fragment. The fragment weighs 1.1g, measures 1.5mm in width and 7mm in height, and it is slightly bent at one corner (here the filigree border is lost). The shape of the fragment suggests that the original object was cut as a cruciform pattern from a circular plate in order to give a splayed out cross with empty rounded armpits (for a similar shape, see the Beeston Tor Cave brooch, deposited c. 875 in The Making of England, no. 245a). The cross-shape was decorated with gold rather coarse filigree, which also provi…

TREASURE CASE : 2004 T291 Description: An Anglo-Saxon gold cross-shaped pendant cut from a sheet of gold. One of the arms is perforated quite near the edge, most probably to allow its use as a pendant. It is of Greek form, with expanding arms of equal length, and the armpits are rounded. It is totally plain and undecorated on both sides, and slightly convex on the 'good side' (the back shows some displaced metal near the cut hole). There are some signs of wear. A gold Anglo-Saxon thrymsa dating c.655 - c.675. The obverse shows a bust right with two symbols in front of the face. The upper symbol appears to be a cross with a line across the base, the lower a large 'Z' reversed. It would seem that the coin was edged on the obverse by a ring of closely set pellets, however more than half of these are missing which is suggestive that the edges of the coin might have been clipped. The body/shoulders of the bust are adorned with clothing or armour shown by the presence of closely set pellets. The bust is shown wearing a tightly fitting hat o…

"Report on a case of possible Treasure from Ainderby Steeple, North Yorkshire (2009 T717) This report concerns what appears to be a tremissis or pseudo-tremissis of the 7th century. The tremissis is a coin type widely issued by the Merovingian Franks in this period, but also produced by the Anglo-Saxons and Frisians. Such coins were produced in fairly good gold at the beginning of the century, but with the gold contained declining as the century progressed, with the gold increasingly replaced by silver. From its appearance, this one probably dates from somewhere fairly early in the ce…
