Object type: BELL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small iron hand-bell plated with copper-alloy using the 'fusion-plating process' (Bourke 1980; 1983). The bell is corroded but appears to be made from a single piece of iron that has been folded in two; the seam, which is located to the side, is now open and was presumably once riveted together. The bell has pulled shoulders, which results in a very narrow apex. In plan the bell is sub-oval. A ring was set in the top of the bell which served both as a handle and for a suspension of the clapper. The former is evidenced by two small knobs of iron at the apex; the latter is perhaps …

A post-medieval copper-alloy coin-weight of George III. The coin weight has raised edge around the diameter , and a plain reverse surface. On the obverse side, there is ewer or laver pot, sword and a crowned G. The ewer is a countermark of George III period and of The Worshipful Company of Founders. It would have been stamped by the Beadle of the Company to indicate that the weight had been inspected and passed. This countermark was used in association with other marks such as the sword, the mark of the City of London, and a crowned initial of the king. The weight weighs about 6.36 …

County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval copper-alloy spur. The spur was the tradional U-shape but only one arm remains. The arm is curved in profile and D-shaped in cross-section, tapering to the incomplete terminal. The apex of the arm is decorated along its length with notches, with two pairs of moulded transverse ribs. The centre of the spur contains a raised moulded pointed oval knop. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A penannular ring of cast copper alloy with an oval cross-section and tapering to a sharp point at either end. The sharp pointed ends overlap. No trace of gilding survives. Objects of this shape are quite common finds from Roman contexts and are usually interpreted as earrings (Allason-Jones "Ear-Rings in Roman Britain", this is interpreted as Type 1 common from 1st to the 4th century). Similar objects have, however, also been found from later, Early Medieval contexts, where they are interpreted as finger rings or earrings (Rogers "Anglian and other finds from Fishergate" pages 1370-1…
