Copper alloy and iron possible screw. An iron shank sheathed in copper alloy, with three turns of a finely inscribed screw thread on its outer surface. Corroded iron projects from one end; the other appears to have been cut with heavy shears. The mass may suggest further iron within the object, which is perhaps treated to retard corrosion while retaining strength. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800.

Copper alloy with traces of gilding mount. Sub-rectangular openwork mount. A crudely modelled and hairless concavo-convex (i.e. hollow backed) mask with slit mouth, a ridge nose, and large almond shaped eyes occupies the centre of a sub-rectangular frame. The frame is decorated with angular stepped ornament below the mask, with a bordered field above it, and billeted edges above and below it. The decoration has been enhanced by crude notching within the frame. Traces of gilding are retained, most extensively on one side of the mask. Corroded and abraded. The hollow on the back of the …

Copper alloy vessel fragment. Robust cast hook with a waisted lug for rotating suspension, which would necessarily engage a slot or socket. Diagonal striations may be file or wear marks and appear on both sides of the hook and along its back edge. Copper alloy thimble. Cast domed thimble of 'beehive' form, with an inscribed foot ring. Punched indentations appear around the sides and over most of the top, with an apical field left empty. These appear to have been punched in circumferential rows, and those on the upper curving surface are of diminishing size. A pair of adjacent splits appears in the side, and several indentations are either corroded or pierced through. Suggested date: Early Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Copper alloy book fitting. Cast plano-convex strip with the stub of a broken loop of internal diameter 3.5mm at one end. Relief decoration comprises a series of three angular chevron steps next to the loop, and a similar step, reversed in its orientation, at the other end next to a flat-ended terminal. Sunken chevrons converge to decorate a triangular section field between these zones of relief decoration. The flat back of the mount is lightly sunken along its centre line, though it is uncertain whether this is a deliberate or adventitious feature. Lightly bent along its length, perha…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy with white metal plating pendant. Cast bracket, resembling the Greek character Omega in shape. A steel spindle (lost) was formerly held between the feet of the 'letter', its position marked by ferrous corrosion. A monogram, probably GR, is stamped at one of the feet of the 'letter', probably on its reverse which is smoothed and polished by wear. A pivoting T-bar with cuboid ends is looped about the bracket at an apical constriction. The purpose of the object is unknown, though it appears to have been robustly made and shows no sign of distortion save for the loss of its s…
