Volcanic Tufa, probably Langdale Greenstone, polished axe fragment. Splinter from the cutting edge of a greenstone polished axe head, probably Group 6, comprising an area spalled from one face, and a very limited extent from the adjacent face. The angle between the faces is unusually sharp. This may indicate manufacture or use as an adze, for which a different action is required - this suggestion was kindly offered by Brian Kearsley. Alternatively, it may arise from heavy wear, or from the previous breakage and reshaping of an axe-head. Suggested date: Neolithic, 3500-2100 BC. Le…

A copper-alloy lipped terret dating from the Late Iron Age to early Roman period (c. 0-75 AD). The cast, circular-sectioned hoop, diminishing from diameter 7.3mm to 6.4mm as it rises, with a bar of flat-based oval section and a collars separating the bar from the hoop. Three lipped motifs are equidistantly spaced around the ring, each with a plain band in the middle. There is discernible thickening on the back of each motif, though they are not carried within the ring, and there is the suspicion of ferrous corrosion intermittently within the hoop, though there is no evidence for the e…

Copper alloy possible buckle fragment. Cast fragment of lentoid section, with a discernible curvature along its length. This feature may suggest this to be a small fragment of a decorative hat or shoe buckle. The slightly convex display face bears an outer border of tiny pellets, a field which includes a T-shaped figure and another object, perhaps a leaf - both likely to form part of a recurring pattern - and an inner billeted border of three sub-rectangular blocks, again a small part of a recurring design. Copper alloy brooch. Disc brooch. Hollow brooch, apparently cast in one piece, with a central bordered boss surrounded by three concentric rings in relief and twelve semicircular hollows, also with edges modelled in relief. A low outer rim resembles a back plate, though it is probably not a separate piece. Two torn apertures on the back of the brooch appear to mark the loss of a hinged pin and its catch plate. The design resembles that of a Roman disc brooch; a comparable design is presented by Mackreth (2011, plate 105 no. 13239) among others dated to the late 2nd to 3rd century AD, …

Cast copper alloy pole-mounted and skirted terret ring dating from the early Roman period (AD43-200). The hoop is circular and has an internal diameter of 13.5mm above a rectangular collar. Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast spring fastened brooch with two coils of a spring and an elongated oval bow bearing paired vertical grooves defining a plain field; the edges to either side bear abraded punched cabled decoration. This resembles Mackreth's (2011, Plate 7 nos 4054 and 4014) Lowbury/class ND 2b-c brooch with decoration down each side of the upper bow. Unusually, the bow emerges under the chord of the spring rather than passing over it, which might suggest this brooch has been distorted; catch-plate and pin are both lost. Lead alloy scabbard chape. Cast oval cylinder with two vertical moulded lines representing seams, a plain upper border, and a fish-scale pattern overall. A pair of hatched ovals adjacent to one modelled seam may represent tassels. Pierced at base. This unusual skeuomorphic piece imitates various features of a copper alloy sheet metal chape, for which this material would be less suitable. It may be related to the lead alloy copies of jewellery in vogue in the 13th century. It could, however, have been used as terminal for the end of a leather or wooden knife sheath, as is suggested by …

Cream coloured Fossiliferous Limestone possible polisher, rubber or smoother. Sub-triangular flat stone, smoothed on upper and lower surfaces and along two edges. This object was recovered as a possible miniature axe-head, a function for which the material is unsuitable. However, its flat smoothed form may be the result of either a natural processes - such as erosion in water - or utilisation. It resembles a pumice stone , an item supplied in recent times for cosmetic use to rub off dead skin; pumice stone inserts were also used in pincushions to sharpen points. Such uses may have bee…
