A fragment of a ceramic vessel of uncertain date. The fragment is a body sherd with hard and coarse fabric of a dark brownish-orange colour. Numerous small quartz inclusions are present within the fabric.
The fragment is 52.5mm long, 23.8mm wide, 10mm thick and weighs 15.5g.
Generic fabric types such as this with no specific diagnostic features can be difficult to date precisely and range from Iron Age to medieval in date. However, it seems probable that this sherd is from a hand made vessel which suggests an earlier date.

A sherd from the side of a large, Roman greyware vessel, possibly a storage jar, dating from AD100-400. The fabric is a light grey in colour and of a coarse, gritty material. There are quartz inclusions, including a few large pebbles. The fabric is fairly soft and has an irregular texture. On the outer side of the sherd is part of a simple design consisting of a horizontal groove with four vertical grooves depending from it at equidistant intervals. There is a further, curved groove, but this is likely to be the result of damage and not part of the design. The sherd is 62mm long, 47.9m…

A complete Roman cast copper-alloy mount (or handle) dating from 43-410 AD, in the form of a small figurine in the form of a figurine of a male banqueter.
Above the waistline the banqueter is naked and below the waistline the body is draped in a mantle which is represented by cast and incised lines. The figure is reclining to the left on his elbow with the right leg raised and the head facing forward. The facial features are vague and may have eroded and worn. Incised lines on the rear surface suggest that the banqueter is reclining on a couch. The base of the figurine has a rough …

A fragment of a stoneware vessel, probably a jug, with moulded decoration. The decoration comprises part of the beard from a bearded male face above a bordered cartouche containing script. The letters may be nonesense, and seem to be a retrograde E followed by W T I. The fragment comes from a type of stoneware vessel known as a Bartmann or Bellarmine jug, the bearded face thought to be lampooning Cardinal Bellarmine (1542-1621), and dates from the post-medieval period (1600-1750). The outer surface is dark brown which has been salt-glazed, producing the mottled effect. The interior i…

A group of pottery from a pottery production site at Legsby, Lincolnshire. Report by Ian Rowlinson.
A small group of Roman pottery from Legsby was presented to the author for comment by Adam Daubney (Portable Antiquities Scheme) after being found after dredging a ditch. This group consists of six large greyware sherds all weighing above 190g that can be dated to the later 2nd to 3rd century including a nearly complete carinated beaker which has been burnished externally. Carinated beaker and bowl forms were a common product of the pottery kilns in the area around Market Rasen. Paral…

A seemingly incomplete cast copper-alloy leg from a post-medieval cooking vessel. The foot is seemingly missing, lost to a neat, transverse break. On the outer surface is the leg there are five low ridges, a wider central one, ridges at the edges, and a further ridge between the two on each side. The cross-section of the majority of the leg is sub-triangular, curved on one side as the reverse is concave with a deep central channel, deeper towards the break. The break at the attachment end is with the junction with the vessel's body which is curved and internally smooth. The object has…
