A Medieval cast copper alloy zoomorphic vessel spout probably dating to the 15th century AD. The cylindrical spout was cast separately from the rest of the vessel and soldered on via the long sloping 'C' shaped arm. The spout itself is tubular and terminates in a dog's head with open mouth from which protrudes the end of the spout. The dog's head has a moulded nose, prominent, rounded brow and sub-oval ears that extend slightly above the flattened head; the eyes are not distinguished. These artefacts are pouring spouts likely to be from a pedestal based ewer like a priests was…

PAS-RC07 Material found out of grid Rim sherd of a cooking pot or storage vessel probably dating from the late medieval or early post medieval period (1400 - 1600 AD). The fabric is a hard earthenware with sparse grog and sand inclusions. The fabric colour is mid orange grey. There is glaze present on the interior and rim but not on the exterior. From the rim of the sherd a diameter for the pot can be estimated; this would be approximately 13cm, however, only 5% survives so this is not accurate. There is not enough of the body of the pot surviving to give an estimation of …

Base fragment of a Roman ceramic bowl or dish in samian (terra sigillata) ware. The fabric is pale orange with mica, sparse fine quartz sand and rounded dark red iron ore grains. Bright orange semi-vitrified slip on the inner and outer sides. Lines from wheel throwing. Part of the base and foot ring survive but too little to identify the form. Abraded breaks, 8.80 grams. The colour and presence of mica may suggest a central Gaulish centre, probably Lezoux dating from c. AD 120-200.

Pottery and lead vessel repair of potsherd. Mended sherd of reduced fabric with oxidised external surface and a thick white slip within; a dribble of splashed glaze appears on the outer surface. A blob of lead has been used to mend a cavity of depth 2.9mm on the inside, though this flaw did not carry through the vessel wall. This repair was perhaps to enable use of the vessel in a dairy or similar setting, and probably corrected a manufacturing flaw rather than damage incurred in the working life of the vessel. Suggested date: Later Medieval, 1350-1500. Length: 40.2mm, Thickness …

Half of the base of a Roman greyware vessel. The base would have been about 12cm in diameter. The fabric is hard and coarse with an irregular laminated texture. It is light grey throughout and contains numerous poorly sorted inclusions, mainly quartz, with fewer slightly larger, round black inclusions and smaller particles of mica. Most of the original surface is missing. The centre of the base has a slight omphaloid depression. The base is 22.76mm thick.

A cast copper alloy foot fom a vessel of Roman date. The foot is lunate (peltate) and would have formed one of three soldered to the base of a round-bottomed bowl. WAW-18C577 is very similar. Crummy illustrated a similar artefact as #2051 (1983, p73, fig 76) described as a possible vessel foot, and dated to Period 3 ( c. 60 - c.80 AD). This identification has been confirmed by the discovery of a complete strainer bowl from part of the Wheathampstead burial group (2002 T83), Hertfordshire. The base displays three feet of this style, attached flat to the base, with the peltate tips …

Lead flat-based miniature bowl. The flat base appears from the photograph to have a diameter of c. 26mm and the straight sides slope upwards to a maximum diameter of 51mm at the rim. A drilled hole in the upper side of diameter 2mm may have been intended to secure the object. A series of notches runs along the rim about one third of the way around its circumference. Now dented on one side, and patinated overall. This object may be a water or food bowl for a caged bird, with provision to tie it to the cage bars. The weight of lead would help prevent the bowl being knocked ove…

A fragment of a Medieval to Post-Medieval cast copper-alloy handle from a cauldron (c. 1250-c. 1650 AD). The handle was originally L-shaped and has a break close to the bend. The handle is oval in cross-section throughout it length with a small amount of the vessel rim remaining at the complete end where it is attached immediately below the rim. The fragment is corroded and has a drab green patina with small areas of sooting. The breaks are old. This 'L'-shaped cauldron lug is similar to one illustrated in Butler et. al. (2009, 5; ref. 3a). A base fragment of a late Roman ceramic vessel, a calcite-gritted jar from a Yorkshire kiln, c. 250-400. The sherd consists of the base of a jar and a small portion of wall. The clay is a dark grey colour with a charcoal-black exterior. Large calcite inclusions can be seen in the fabric, many of which have been lost (due to the chemical reaction between the calcite and the acidic nature of the local soils), creating pitting or 'vesicles' on the interior and exterior surfaces of the sherd.
