Pottery and lead vessel repair of potsherd. Mended sherd of reduced fabric with oxidised external surface and a thick white slip within; a dribble of splashed glaze appears on the outer surface. A blob of lead has been used to mend a cavity of depth 2.9mm on the inside, though this flaw did not carry through the vessel wall. This repair was perhaps to enable use of the vessel in a dairy or similar setting, and probably corrected a manufacturing flaw rather than damage incurred in the working life of the vessel. Suggested date: Later Medieval, 1350-1500. Length: 40.2mm, Thickness …

Lead flat-based miniature bowl. The flat base appears from the photograph to have a diameter of c. 26mm and the straight sides slope upwards to a maximum diameter of 51mm at the rim. A drilled hole in the upper side of diameter 2mm may have been intended to secure the object. A series of notches runs along the rim about one third of the way around its circumference. Now dented on one side, and patinated overall. This object may be a water or food bowl for a caged bird, with provision to tie it to the cage bars. The weight of lead would help prevent the bowl being knocked ove…

Pottery base sherd from a cup. Slipware. A hard dull red fabric with splashed internal and external metallic glaze with an external trail of white slip. The vessel, perhaps a cup, had an estimated diameter of 120mm, with a flat base and a stepped foot. The body is corrugated; lightly on the middle part of the outside, and more prominently within. The area bearing white slip also bears crude knife-cut vertical slashes. The impression is of an individualistic piece. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1700. Weight: 61.87gms.
