Nine sherds from Severn Valley coarseware pottery vessels. As the fabric, colour and thickness differs in each sherd it is likely that different vessels are represented in the assemblage. A rim sherd of Samian type Roman pottery. The fabric hard and fine grained with mica inclusions. The fabric is assessed by observation of worn rather than fresh breaks. The slip / glaze is abraded and worn and a mid brown red colour. Where the sherd has been abraded the slip has been removed to reveal the buff orange brown coloured fabric beneath. This type of fabric and glaze is best compared to that of Central Gaul (Leroux) which is commonly found in Britain (www.worcestershireceramics.org). The rim is too small to have any remains of moulding or decoration…

Sherd of Roman Severn Valley Ware Mortaria. The fabric is relatively soft and slightly powdery with sparse angular and sub angular quartz and grit inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a mid buff brown and the outer colour is a lighter mid buff. Three body sherds of black burnished type pottery. They have a black fabric with some oxidation in the core. The fabric is hard with quartz and mica inclusions. All the sherds appear to have the same thickness, fabric and colour and therefore it is possible that they are from the same vessel.
The largest sherd measures 26.1mm in length, 23.1 mm in width, 7 mm in thickness and weighs 5.9 grams.
The smallest sherd measures 26.2 mm in length, 14.9 mm in width, 6 mm in thickness and weighs 2.3 grams.
The bulk weight is 12.1 grams.

Three body sherds from a medieval cooking vessel (1150-1400). They have a black fabric with some oxidation in the core. The fabric is hard with quartz and mica inclusions. On the largest sherd there is evidence of iron corrosion (possibly iron stone). All the sherds appear to have the same thickness, fabric and colour and therefore it is possible that they are from the same vessel. The fabric of the vessel also looks burned - possibly suggesting it had been in an uncontrolled fire prior to deposition.
The largest sherd measures 50.7mm in le…

Material found out of grid
Rim sherd of a cooking pot or storage vessel probably dating from the late medieval or early post medieval period (1400 - 1600 AD). The fabric is a hard earthenware with sparse grog and sand inclusions. The fabric colour is mid orange grey. There is glaze present on the interior and rim but not on the exterior.
From the rim of the sherd a diameter for the pot can be estimated; this would be approximately 13cm, however, only 5% survives so this is not accurate. There is not enough of the body of the pot surviving to give an estimation of …
