A fragment of a glass vessel of post-medieval date. The fragment is sub-rectangular and very thick producing a dark blackish-green colour. Due to the relatively small portion of glass now remaining it is not possible to determine the exact nature of the vessel from which it originated. The glass fragment is 60.8mm long, 31.3mm wide, 8.4mm thick and weighs 28.2g.

Glass bead, exposed to the sun and weather so that it is now light blue, but was probably a cobalt blue colour originally. The bead is circular in plan and section and spherical in profile, with a narrowing central perforation and a lip on the edge of the hole, which shows that the molten glass would have been twisted and rolled around a central rod during its manufacture. Crummy (1983) illustrates a similar short oblate bead on page 33, Fig.34, No.617, which is dated from the 3rd to the 4th century AD. Roman beads in stratified local contexts are rare, but examples of blue glass …

A blue glass bead probably dating from the Early Medieval period. It is sub-spherical with a central hole of 1.83mm diameter. It was made by coiling molten glass round a rod and the spiral trails of glass are visible in the structure. It is an opaque sky blue colour, with some scratching and pitting. Glass beads are difficult to date, but the other finds from this area suggest an Early Medieval date.

A complete glass bead of uncertain date. The bead is circular in plan though badly formed with an irregular surface and multiple pitted areas. The glass is a light bluish-green colour. The bead is 19.1mm in diameter, 10.9mm thick and weighs 4.4g. Glass beads are very difficult to date with any certainty therefore due to a lack of contextual evidence and any diagnostic features it is not possible to date this object any more closely and it could be Roman through to post-medieval in date.

White (clear) glass of green-blue tint bottle base. Shard from the base of a hand blown glass vessel with punt; part of an inner ring of glass adheres to the edge of the punt, possibly as a flaw corrected during manufacture. The base of the vessel is worn, indicating its prolonged use. This could be either a Roman or a Post-Medieval vessel, as the recipes for soda glass used in both periods were similar, and both could produce very durable glass. Suggested date: Unknown, 43-1900. Diameter: 28.5mm, Height (punt): 10.5mm, Thickness (wall): 3.3mm, Weight: 6.57gms.

A conical bi-chrome glass stud slightly taller than it is wide, width 16.5-17.5 mm, height 18mm, on a clay core. The glass is opaque grey to off-white and deep blue, semi-opaque and worked in a feathered pattern and wrapped around a fired clay core, visible at the base. The base diameter would fit a substantial setting and it would have projected for some distance. The top appears quite smooth and unchipped and the whole weighs 6.34g. There is also a possibility that this was a playing piece from a set, as mentioned for a glass cabochon found at Wearmouth (Cramp 2005, 91). Playing A…
