Two fragments of possible ceramic building material. The fragments are relatively robust and it is possible that they could be large sherds from Severn Valley vessels: however from their shape, it is more likely that they are fired remnants of rough brick or tile. The fabric of the fragments is very similar to Severn Valley pottery dating from the Roman period (100-400 AD). However such a tight date cannot be suggested for these as this form of pottery is very local - and therefore the clay source would have been used throughout the historic perio…

All the sherds are irregular in plan and broadly sub-rectangular in profile. The sherds are also worn and abraded by movement in the ploughsoil. The fabric is a relatively soft fired earthenware with a number of small …

A rim sherd of Samian type Roman pottery. The fabric hard and fine grained with mica inclusions. The fabric is assessed by observation of worn rather than fresh breaks. The slip / glaze is abraded and worn and a mid brown red colour. Where the sherd has been abraded the slip has been removed to reveal the buff orange brown coloured fabric beneath. This type of fabric and glaze is best compared to that of Central Gaul (Leroux) which is commonly found in Britain (www.worcestershireceramics.org). The rim is too small to have any remains of moulding or decoration…

Sherd of Roman Severn Valley Ware Mortaria. The fabric is relatively soft and slightly powdery with sparse angular and sub angular quartz and grit inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a mid buff brown and the outer colour is a lighter mid buff. There is not enough of the body of the mortaria surviving to give an estimation of the depth or overall form/shape or diameter of the vessel.
The sherd measures 40.3mm length, 30.6mm width, is 18mm thick and weighs 20.9 grams.
