A complete cast copper alloy flanged axehead of early Bronze Age date. The axehead is sub-rectangular with a narrow and thin rounded butt and widely curved cutting edge. From the butt the body extends, expanding slightly in width towards a splayed blade and cutting edge. There are slightly raised flanges along the sides both of which show signs of wear and the surface of the axehead around the cutting edge is quite corroded and pitted. No casting flashes are visible and may have been removed after production. The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and is worn. The axehead is 126.3m…

TREASURE CASE : 2012 T437. A damaged composite ring made from a thin sheet of gold probably formed around two copper alloy penannular rings, now corroded away. Both terminals are broken and distorted. Dimensions: Diameter: 13.9mm; Width: 5.7mm; Thickness: 2.9mm; Weight 1.93g. Composition: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of a composite ring from Willerby, Yorkshire, indicated a gold content of approximately 71-74%, a silver content of approximately 18-21% with at least7% copper. The object weighs 1.93 grams. Identification: A well-known Bronze Age type, d…

An incomplete fragment of a cast copper alloy socketed axehead of Bronze Age date 1000-800 BC. The fragment consists of a part of the rim of the socket. There is a raised casting seam running laterally and centrally to the fragment. The collar consists of a single stepped raised edge at the socketed end. The remaining profile suggests it is from a sub-rectangular socket and is therefore a curvilinear profile. The surface is pitted and some of the original patina remains on the collar and there are patches of light green. There is not enough detail to precisely date this fragment howeve…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped lithic implement of early Bronze Age date. The implement is roughly figure of eight-shaped in plan with an irregular plano-convex section. Evidence of knapping is only present in one area of the implement where a semi-circular notch has been created with steep sides which taper to form a sharp edge. The limited knapping suggests this piece was a naturally occurring flint with the notch removed for a function. The flint is a mid whitish-brown colour with no evidence of cortex re-growth. The implement is 66.2mm long, 37.6mm wide, 15.5mm thick and weighs 36.1g.
