Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Near complete cast copper alloy unidentified object of possible Roman date (due to association with other finds of Roman date & similar patination). Although superficially like a nail in appearance the item apears too finely crafted to have served this purpose and other uses such as possible pin have been considered but no parallel found at this time.
The item, which is cast in one piece, consists of an semi-circular head with an elongated tapered shaft projecting from below the straight-edge of the semi-circle. The shaft immediately below the head is lozenge-shaped in section swell…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Late Iron Age to Post-Medieval copper alloy ring with sheet copper alloy twist around the hoop. The ring measures 17.24mm in diameter (internal 9.19mm) and with the sheet copper alloy 51.34mm. It weighs 6.6g.
The sheet copper alloy is c.3.5mm wide and c.1.5mm thick. It twists three times to create a loop around the ring, which the ends extend freely. Both objects are of a different copper alloy, the twist being a light green in colour, the ring a duller dark grey.

A grey, stone spindle-whorl decorated with incised lines radiating from the central hole (for the wooden spindle). It's condition is worn and one or 2 pieces have flaked away from the surface. Its overall diameter is 46mm, and the central hole is 10mm. Difficult to date, spindle-whorls having been used from prehistory up into the post-medieval period.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy blade of uncertain date.
The piece represents the distal end of the blade. The narrow, slender artefact is parallel-sided along much of its length, tapering to a blunt point. The cross section is lenticular, with a suggestion of a central ridge on each face. The surfaces are heavily corroded and the break appears to have occurred in antiquity.
Dimensions: 48.6mm long, up to 9.2mm wide and 2.5mm thick. Weight: 4.82g.
It is possible that this is the tip of an implement such as a dirk or rapier; however, its slender form suggests it is more likely to be…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An abraded base sherd possibly from a Roman vessel. It has an irregular shape. It is has a flat base with little sagging. One wall emerges at an angle of c. 140 degrees. The vessel has a light-grey interior but is an oxidised mid/light-orange colour on the internal surface, greyer on the base. It has fairly even shell tempering with some fragments up to c. 2.5mm long. It may be from the Roman kilns at Harrold, however a medieval date cannot be ruled out entirely.

A worn and corroded, broadly circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is flat on both surfaces with a rectangular cross-section. It is basic and has suffered corrosion and bending and is 'decorated' with crude angular punch marks all over both surface. The artefact has a large central hole with a diameter of c. 8.8mm. The hole has a ridge around it on both surfaces presumably a product of its creation. The object is c. 4.5mm thick and weighs 21.98g.
It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn…

An oval shaped stone with a flattened base, that has a roughly circular perforation through the centre. The perforation is set at 90 degrees from the flattened base and has a diameter of 4.68mm. The stone weighs 3.68g, has an oval diameter of 17.63mm x 14.46mm and height of 13.94mm.
Discussion:
Stones can have naturally occurring cylindrical perforations if the stone has formed around another item such as Belamite fossils. The stone can then be eroded and weathered into pebbles that fortuitously resemble beads and therefore makes identification difficult.

A very worn and corroded crudely cast lead weight in the shape of cone. It is broadly triangular in cross-section, with a flat base allowing it to stand; the top has been bent to one side. It has a hole running right through its centre, Dia.: 3.5 - 4.4mm. The artefact now has an off-white surface with recesses and denting all over. Such objects are undiagnostic and a wide date range is here given.

A copper alloy blade or knife of uncertain date, with a broken socket attachment. The blade is sub-triangular with convex sides and a flat base. There are edge facets visible on one face on both curved edges. The copper alloy has been tinned or silvered. There are a few chips in the edge, and a hole through the blade. At the base, projecting from the centre, is a tube of which only about half survives. This was presumably to allow the blade to be fixed to a handle. The socket is decorated with two longitudinal grooves along the surviving edge of the butt joint. Most of the edges are b…

A large copper-alloy silvered ring, of uncertain date or function. The ring is roughly D-shaped in cross-section, with two incised grooves around the outer circumference creating a raised central ridge. The outer surface of the ring was heavily silvered, but the interior of the ring is undecorated. Similar rings were used for a multiple of functions but are usually not silvered. As such, the ring may have served as an attachment loop for a piece of horse or personal equipment. The date of this object is uncertain as such objects were in use from at least the late Iron Age through to t…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Part of a socketed copper-alloy arrowhead (probably) of uncertain date.
The socket, which appears to survive to its original length, is of circular section, tapering towards the top. At the basal opening it measures 6.8mm in internal diameter. This opening appears to be flanked by a pair of low flanges, which gradually dissipate as they extend upwards. Approximately 10mm up, the sides of the socket flare into a damaged, 'leaf-shaped' head.
Overall dimensions: 31.2mm long, up to 13.9mm wide and 9.4mm thick. Weight: 7.27g.
The form of this piece is reminiscent of Late Bronze Age s…

Object type: ADZE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Iron head of an Adze, heavily corroded, dating from any point in the Roman to Modern periods.
In plan, the adze has a trapezoidal head with a projecting base. In profile the adze is triangular with a gentle curve. The projecting base that fits into a haft is subsquare in section while the main blade of the tool is rectangular in section.
The edge is more extensively worn in one corner, and this wear combined with the curvature of the blade indicates that the user was probably right-handed.
