Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small copper alloy harness ring which probably dates from the medieval or post medieval period (Geake 2001). Very functional objects like this are difficult to date since their design does not change. It is circular in shape, with hexagonal section. There is no visible wear, and there are file marks. For a similar example see SWYOR-8F2123.The patina is grey suggesting a high tin content.

Two stone cobbles which are heat altered and shaped. Both are rounded cobbles which have one face worn or shaped to be flat.
One stone is complete. It is dense and well consolidated with many mica particles. Originally a yellow grey colour, pink discolouration suggests heating. The flat surface looks to have been pecked rather than cut or ground. It is 80.52mm long, 60.4mm wide and 33.14mm thick. It weighs 222g.
The other stone is broken with a jagged, irregular break. One face is rounded, the original cobble, and the other is ground flat. The stone is dense and well consoli…

A piece of tap slag of uncertain date from Roman to Post Medieval. It is dense, magnetic and black to purple in colour. It forms a thick plate which is rough and irregular on the lower face, with characteristic runs of solidified molten metal across the top face. This piece is just one small example of the many pieces recovered from the same place.
Tap-slag is slag that is 'tapped' from a bloomery furnace. This is carried out during smelting so as to allow the long continuance of the operation. It cools to a solid slag with marked flow lines. There were fewer bloomeries after the…

A flint flake; debitage; the unworked waste material from flint knapping. This is a primary flake with cortex on the dorsal face. One edge has a vein of crystals along it. These are probably quartz and they have caused a flaw in the flint which is why it broke there.

A small fragment of copper alloy, a fragment of a larger unidentified object of unknown date. The fragment is curved, and has two rounded edges which are probable original. The other edge is broken revealing the green core. The surface is smooth and shiny and a dark grey colour. This may suggest a tin rich coating. The condition of the metal suggests a Post Medieval date, but it is impossible to be certain from such a small fragment.

A piece of stone which was recovered because it was not the usually occurring geology in this area. It may be a naturally occurring nodule of iron rich stone (though it does not react to a magnet). It has a dense structure and is dark brown with a red tint. Parts of the surface are black and shiny with a crystalline structure, but it is not sooted. Other areas are pimply, and other areas have traces of sandstone on the surface. It has not been possible to identify the nature of this material, but it is probably an iron rich naturally occurring stone. It does not appear to be waste mat…
