Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two chert blades. The blades have highly arched dorsal faces with evidence of multiple previous parallel removals. On both blades large bulb scars have removed most of the bulb of percussion on the ventral face. One is in pale buff chert, they other, which has c.15% cortex remaining on the dorsal face, is in dark grey-brown chert. They weigh 23.43 grams.

One very small Mesolithic blade core in pale to mid-grey flint. It is conical with a prepared platform at the top and angled sides showing repeated, parallel bladelet removals. One side is still covered in cortex suggesting it is pebble flint. There is also a patch of cortex in the middle of the other side, either from a flaw in the flint or suggesting a very small pebble was used. It is illustrates the intense utilisation of available material. It is 24.1 by 17.5mm across the top and 26.4mm long, it weighs 9.82 grams.

Twelve snapped flagements of blades. Seven proximal ends (microburin), two centre sections and three distal ends. Only three have any cortex remaining and on those it is less than 15% coverage. The proximal ends show evidence of working off prepared platforms and all show evidence on the dorsal faces of repeated parallel removals frpm a blade core. Some at least of the snaps are deliberate with chipping to one side suggesting the pieces were notched before snapping. The flint varies, one is palest grey, two pale buff while the others are mid grey with paler mottling. They weigh 21.08 …

Knapped chert tertiary blade of probably Mesolithic to Early Neolithic date. Struck off a prepared platform with the bulb of percussion remaining on the ventral face. It has an angled snap at the distal end. The edges are slightly chipped all the way along and may have been used. It is pale buff chert which has developed a white patina. It is 30.7mm long, 18.4mm wide and 4.9mm thick; it weighs 2.98 grams.

Eight knapped flint blade segments of Mesolithic or early Neolithic date. Four proximal ends, three middle sections and one distal end. The segments have a mix of straight and more irregular breaks, some at least of which are probably deliberate. Two are tertiary pieces, the rest secondary, none have more than twenty percent cortex coverage and most less than 10%. Two of the proximal ends are struck off the cortex and two off prepared platforms. Several have regular parallel arises on the dorsal face suggesting they were struck off cores used to produce multiple blades. The flint rang…

Knapped flint tertiary blade of Mesolithic date. The blade is damaged at both ends with the striking platform and most of the bulb of percussion missing. There are regular parallel arises on the dorsal face indicating previous blade removals from the same platform. The flint has built up a white patina but recent chips show the flint to be mid-grey. It is 54.5mm long, 18.9mm wide and 4.8mm thick; it weighs 5.60 grams

One knapped flint core and a chunk from a second core. The core has been worked on both sides but there is a natural flaw (air pocket) in the flint on one side and removals from that side appear more irregular and possibly relate to core preparation. The side without the flaw has been worked with regular, parallel blade removals starting at the prepared platform at one end. Cortex covers the distal end and c.20% of the flawed side. This indicates the piece is pebble flint which could be sourced relatively locally. It has been worked to a stage where further removals would be difficu…

A microlith formed on a bladelet of grey brown flint. The left margin has been abruptly retouched and blunted along its length forming a point at the distal end. The right margin is unretouched and sharp with a small natural nick in the edge. It may have been hafted with the blunt edge set with resin into a groove in a wood or bone tool. Butler(2005) illustrates a small lanceolate piece on page 101, fig 39, 14.

A complete 'snapped' flint blade of probable Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The flint blade is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and triangular (crested) in cross section. The bulb of percussion and lower half of the blade have both been removed through snapping. The dorsal face shows three ridges (crests) where previous blades have been removed fro a core. The long edges have been rolled in the soil but there is no evidence of retouch. The flint is a mid grey mottled colour with large areas of mid cream grey coloured mottling. The flint is also very course suggesting a chert like s…

A large and complete flint blade of probable later Mesolithic or Neolithic date (6500BC - 3000BC). The flint tool is formed on a flake like blade which is broadly crescentic in shape being a dark mottled tan brown colour. The bulb of percussion is present but trimmed on the ventral (lower) face. The section thickness varies with the area behind the bulb being thickest whilst the opposite end being relatively thin. The upper surface (dorsal) has a series of ridges, formed by the removal of other flakes from a large core prior to the creation of this blade - all these removals have bee…

Reddish brown flint blade. Probably local to the area where it was found, originating from the glacial clay or perhaps river gravels. It is a by-product of the shaping of a larger irregular lump of flint, so that regular shaped pieces can be taken off it to work into tools. The longer than narrow, parallel sided shape is characterised as a blade. In some circumstances the blades are then 'retouched' by finely working the edge in a deliberate way to produce tools or sometimes they can be just used as they are without further working, for cutting or scraping. This one does not betra…
