Incomplete snapped flint blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The flint tool, probably best described as a crested blade or knife, is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and has a sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion is not present, the top of the blade has been trimmed and thinned, however conchoidal fractures are present on the lower (ventral) face. The upper (dorsal) face of the blade has a number of clear facets and ridges. The long edges and ends have all been heavily retouched, especially the edges. The retouch on the left hand edge is most …

Two small incomplete snapped flint blades or bladlets of later Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). These are both struck from a core and have the generic crested appearance. Both have been snapped and neither show signs of retouch on their tips or long edges. The underside of each shows conchoidal rippling but not evidence of bulb of percussion or striking platforms. One flake (the darker of the two) has a small area of cortex present. The flint is a mid mottled grey colour. The source of flint is difficult to ascertain; much of the local flint is procured from glacial and riverine sou…

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An irregular fragment from a core which has been worked in several directions to produce small blades or microliths of late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The core is probably derived from a riverine pebble and a small area of outer cortex (10%) is present on one face. The fragment is heavily worn and the remains of at least one striking platform is present from which blades have been removed. There is no evidence of rejuvenation flakes or multi platform working. The core is a mid- grey colour with a slightly milky white coloured patina. The core measures 26.0mm length, 23.9mm wid…

Prehistoric flint scraper which has been re-used as a strike- a- light. The flint has been re-touched around the edges for use as a scraper. Damage is also visible on the surface, where the flint scraper has later been used as a strike-a -light in order to create a spark to light a fire. The flint is black in colour with a small amount of grey flecks. Cortex still remains on part of the surface of the flint.

A complete Mesolithic to Neolithic flint pick (c. 6500 BC-c. 2100 AD). This implement is sub-triangular in plan and cross-section and is humped at one side. It is wide and thick at the butt end and tapers to a point. It has been knapped overall except for a small area close to the butt where there is a patch of buff cortex. At one side of the cortex a small area has been battered when it was probably used as a hammer-stone. The surfaces are light and dark grey with off-white mottling and red staining. Length: 113.22mm; width: 57.83mm; thickness: 56.57mm. Weight: c. 306.0g.

Two flint and five worked chert fragments. The size of the individual elements of the assembly indicate that they are the debitage of Mesolithic microlith production. Also found eroding out of the same horizon were a number of heavily burnt stone. One lump of grit, over 15 cm across, was broken open to ascertain the extent of burning. The changes due to heat went through the entire stone, excluding the likelihood of the burning being due to a moorland fire. Some smaller burnt stones were also collected as well as number of larger pieces of chert taken from the same horizon. The latter…

A complete Mesolithic discoidal flint blade core (8300-3500 BC). The core has been heavily worked from multiple platforms leaving negative scars where bladelets have been removed. There is one negative cortex inclusion recessed into the distal left hand edge, the core is a retrograde D shape. The dorsal surface in convex with cortex intact at the proximal end there is some evidence of retouch to the right hand side proximally. It is oval in profile.
