The hole would have been for wire or textile ligatures which were used to secure a bag.
The front is decorated with a stamped design of the crowned Dutch shield bearing the rampant lion of Holland with a sword in its right paw. The reverse appears undecorated though is very worn. It is likely that this object was used as an official seal for goods exported from Holland to the UK, and is likely to date from c.1750-1850.

A complete cast lead Russian bale seal of early modern date. The seal is circular in plan with worn edges and a roughly rectangular cross section. It is comprised of a single disc of metal which is perforated by a hole running across its diameter. The holes would have been for wire or textile ligatures which were used to secure a bag.
Stamped text can be seen on both sides of the seal though much on one side is now illegible
The obverse is stamped with four lines of text reading:
AR//[--]POK[---]//[--]KO[--]//[----] (the letter K is in retrograde).
This text represents the initials and surname of the Quality Control Officer and possibly a code for the location at which the Officer worked or the registered number of the sealing tongs he used.
The reverse of the seal is stamped with a further three lines of text reading:
*NP*//[-]HIOH//1785
Denoting the place of export, and the remaining text most probably denotes the producer of the goods with 1785 being the year of production. The stamps are a mixture of Roman and Cyrillic scripts.

A complete cast lead token of medieval to post-medieval date. The token is flat and circular and is decorated with stamped designs on both faces. One face has a central raised pellet with eight raised radiating petal-like shapes extending to the outer edge. Between each of the petals are raised pellets. The other face has an extremely worn fleur-de-lis design.
The metal is a mid greyish-white colour and is worn. The token is 22.1mm in diameter, 3.6mm thick and weighs 8.9g.
Tokens with simple designs are very easy to make and continued in use for a long period. They have a huge range of designs and could have been used for various purposes such as counting, gaming or possibly even as weights. A general date of circa 1400 - 1800 is commonly given for such objects.
