This coin is copying a silver hammered 8 reales of Philip II of Spain (born 1527, reigned 1556-98) minted in Lima (Peru) between 1577 and 1588. Philip II of Spain was the husband of the British Queen, Mary Tudor (born 1516, reigned 1553-1558, married 1554-1558) who was the daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Philip II of Spain was also responsible for sending the Spanish Armarda to attack England in 1588. The mint mark is D for Lima. An incomplete middle Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy pin. It has a flat circular head with an incomplete coiled shaft extending from one edge. The disc is perforated by five circular holes, each 3.5mm in diameter. One hole is central, with the others positioned above, below, and either side of this, forming a cross pattern. The hole to the right-hand side is damaged. The surface on one face has decoration of the faint engraved outline of a diagonal cross, with expanded arms curving around the circular holes. It is difficult to reconstruct the exact pattern due to wear, but it seems that each…

An incomplete copper-alloy pin head of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date. Approximately half of the discoidal pin head remains, the rest having been lost in antiquity. A plain cross divides the upper surface into quarters, each of which is filled by a panel of chip-carved interlace decoration. There are subtle differences between the designs in each of the panels, but all consist of a net-like pattern of narrow ridges, separated by deep 'V-sectioned' fields. Many of the strands terminate in triangles or lozenges, and this is probably designed to give the impression of a zoomorphic n…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy casting jet of probable Mid to Late Bronze Age date. The piece takes the form of an inverted half-cylinder, its bottom point bifurcating into two angled runners. Dimensions: 28.3mm high, 25.6mm wide, 11.8mm wide (top). Weight: 20.93g. Casting jets are waste products which form at the top of a two-piece clay mould when the molten metal has filled the object-shaped void below. As they represent re-usable metal, they were often retained and regularly turn up in founder's hoards of the period (see, for example, 2006 T36, from Devon).

This circular token is based on a late 16th century French jetton (see Mitchiner 1988: 1012, nos. 3051 to 3053), is of the same diameter as the aforementioned but contains an error legend which suggests a non-official manufacture. A cast copper-alloy cart fitting terminal of Roman date. The terminal is formed in the shape of an eagle's head, the beak apart holding a spherical pellet between the tips of the beak. The eyes are clearly formed and the terminal has been cast to form pronounced brow ridges over the eyes. Small patches of dried mud and corrosion products prevent the original surface of the artefact from being seen clearly. Despite this it looks likely that the surface may have been detailed with fine incised or moulded lines that formed the outline of the representation of feathers. This detail is pre…

Cast copper alloy ring, possibly a curtain ring dating from the post-medieval or early modern period. The object is circular in plan and hexagonal in cross-section. The ring varies in thickness where the object has worn probably due to wearing against another connection. Plain rings of such proportions have often been suggested to be Medieval or Post-Medieval harness rings (Geake 2001, 74), though they are typically un-diagnostic.
