A slightly corroded cast copper-alloy medieval strap-slide/loop (c. 14th century AD). The artefact is an elongated D shape with a collared globular knop at the centre of the outer edge. The collar is formed of a transverse ridge with a groove above and below. Through the inner edge is a central perforation within which a separated copper-alloy rivet survives in place. This object now has a dark-green patina with areas of lighter green corrosion product around the knop. For D-shaped strap loops with separate rivets see Read (2001, 22; refs. 223-225) and Griffiths et al. (2008, 131; r…

A complete copper-alloy strap fitting of medieval to post-medieval date. The strap fitting is broadly triangular in plan and tapers towards the tip, the end of which has been rolled inwards and is touching the main body of the strap fitting. The top of the strap fitting has a rectangular perforation with a collar just below before the artefact tapers towards the tip. There are the remains of two small adjacent circular iron rivets, iron corrosion is visible on both faces in the surrounding area of the perforations.

A cast copper-alloy medieval strap-slide with a pair of short pointed internal projections. It is sub-trapezoidal in shape with slightly rounded corners. The artefact has a slightly rounded projection on the outer face. The projections lie closer to the inner edge. A similar example can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 234; ref. 1263) assigned to a late 14th-century context.

A corroded cast copper-alloy hooked mount of medieval to post-medieval date. The mount is sub-rectangular in plan with a body that is triangular in cross-section and a forward-facing hook of rectangular cross-section with rounded corners. The hook narrows along its length flattening to a circular terminal. The faceted sides of the body of the object are plain. The body of the strap fitting has traces of gilding. The lower surface of the body features a pair of integral rivets that have a circular cross-section, one towards the top and the other towards the bottom. One copper-alloy riv…

A complete cast copper-alloy strap-fitting of post-medieval date. The mount is symmetrical in form made up of a three sections arranged in a row: a small central oval body which contracts slightly at either end before expanding into broadly circular terminals. The upper surface is slightly convex with two transverse ridges at the junctions of the body and terminals. The lower surface is flat with two pointed spikes, missing their tips, projecting from behind the two transverse ridges. Similar mounts can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 36; fig. 21).

A slightly worn and corroded, cast copper-alloy medieval bar mount, small and sub-hemispherical in form. The convex, central lobe is crossed by seven neatly incised transverse lines that create ridges. The two smaller perforated side lobes both retain their rivets. The object is similar to artefacts illustrated in Read (2001, 23; fig. 12) and Egan and Pritchard (1991, 214; fig. 134) which are dated to the second half of the fourteenth century.

A cast copper-alloy medieval strap-loop/slide with central perforation for a separate internal rivet, now missing. The artefact is broadly rectangular, with a large moulded outer edge. The outer edge has a central knopped protrusion. This latter is concave internally and decorated on its outer surface with four transverse grooves that create five ridges. Another such strap fitting can be found on this database, ref. HAMP-461517, and also illustrated in Griffiths et al. (2007, 129; ref. 1467). This object now has a dark-grey patina with some patches of off-white corrosion product. One …

An incomplete and bent cast copper-alloy openwork sword belt fitting of Post-medieval date, the artefact is probably the reverse plate of a sword belt fitting. The openwork plate is sub-rectangular in plan with moulded edges. In the centre there is an asymmetrical 'X' openwork design. Either side of the open work there is a perforation to hold a rivet, one survives. Protruding from the lower edge of the back plate are the vestigle remains of two oval loops, which are missing due to old breaks. The left hand edge of the fitting is complete, to the right the arefact is incomplete, two b…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The openwork strap fitting is irregular in plan. The overall decorative design consists of an openwork square at the tip adjacent to an old break. Below this is a broadly oval expansion which terminates in a circular knop. The oval expansion is concave on the reverse and the openwork square is flat. There are two sub rectangular projections which extend from either end of the oval expansion. The strap fitting has been bent outwards slightly.

A damaged fragmentary cast copper-alloy post-medieval strap-fitting: a strap hook with integral loop (17th century AD). This one-piece fitting is moulded at the front and flat the rear. It consists of an oval plate, broken at one end before a collar beyond which a large blunt hook would have been located. Beyond a transverse collar with single groove at the other end is a circular loop, now broken through and with only vestiges surviving. The object has been bent and curved in profile as a result of old damage, as well as scratched. The metal has a dull reddish brown colour with trace…

A fragment of an early post-medieval cast copper-alloy toggle-clasp: the toggle-end dating to c. 16th - c.17th century AD. The fragment consists of a raised and protruding toggle bar at one end, at the end of a plate decorated with symmetrically cast bifurcated knops on both sides of a small circular rivet hole. The toggle bar is an applied broadly lunate bar mount, seemingly riveted in place. The object ends abruptly through the middle of its central openwork section, a natural weak point, due to old damage. A similar example can be found illustrated in Read (2008, 209; ref. 754). Re…

A cast copper-alloy strap junction of medieval date. The central element is quadrilobate, formed of a ring with a rounded lobe at each cardinal point. Between each lobe an attachment loop would have looped round the ring, three attachment loops now survive. Each lobe has a groove coming in from each side towards its base. This, in conjunction with grooves that radiate out from the centre of the base give a scallop shell effect. The lower surface of the ring is flat and plain. Each attachment loop is of the same construction; they vary slightly in size. They are formed of strips folded…

A corroded cast copper-alloy mount (strap-fitting) of post-medieval date. The mount is flat and symmetrical. It has a trefoil terminal, below which a broadly trapezoidal body with flared and rounded lower terminal. The upper surface of the mount is decorated in low relief created through vertically symmetrical curving foliate patterns in the form of fronds emerging from the centre line. There is a leaf pattern within the central lobe of the trefoil terminal. A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date (c. 17th century). The mount is formed of an openwork trefoil plate with a bifurcating collar below, the terminal of which would have curved back in a blunt hook, now missing. The upper lobe of the trefoil is perforated to receive a rivet; there is a further rivet hole central on the collar. In both holes the corroded iron remains of the rivets survive in situ. The other lobes of the trefoil are perforated and there is a further, this time broadly lozengiform, hole between the plate and the collar. The flat…

A broken cast copper-alloy hooked plate from a post-medieval sword-belt fitting. Overall, these strap-fittings tend to consist of a mount with three suspension loops from which hang a trio of hooked plates; the scabbard straps would have been attached to these plates. The ensemble features foliate decoration on their visible faces: an illustration of a complete sword-belt fitting can be found in Read (2001, 43; ref. 373). Their design and decoration are relatively standardised. Such fittings 'proliferate in the 16th and 17th centuries' (Geake 2001, 35). This single hooked plate surv…
