A cast lead token of post-medieval date, decorated bifacially with an irregular geometrical design, of vertical lines from which other lines emerge and split. In between these lines there are placed pellets (Powell type 9; Fletcher 2005, 102).

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded cast lead token of post-medieval date, which seems to be unifacial. Moulded in relief on the other side is a possible cinquefoil (five-petalled flower, Powell type 1); as implied, the other surface appears plain. The token has suffered some losses to its circumference on one side.

Object type: TRIAL PIECE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A possible lead trial piece for a medieval seal matrix. The object is pointed oval in plan with a rectangular protrusion at one narrow end. In profile the protrusion can be seen to be an integral handle, solid and rounded on the upper surface. The main surfaces of the object are flat and plain with bevelling to the sides of the upper. The object has corroded to a variable off-white colour.

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A worn and corroded, broadly circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is flat on both surfaces with a rectangular cross-section. It is basic and has suffered corrosion and bending and is 'decorated' with crude angular punch marks all over both surface. The artefact has a large central hole with a diameter of c. 8.8mm. The hole has a ridge around it on both surfaces presumably a product of its creation. The object is c. 4.5mm thick and weighs 21.98g.
It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A very worn and corroded crudely cast lead weight in the shape of cone. It is broadly triangular in cross-section, with a flat base allowing it to stand; the top has been bent to one side. It has a hole running right through its centre, Dia.: 3.5 - 4.4mm. The artefact now has an off-white surface with recesses and denting all over. Such objects are undiagnostic and a wide date range is here given.

Object type: CAME
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded lead sprue fragment from the casting of post-medieval window cames. It is formed of a strip with three H-shaped protrusions (c. 8.2 by c. 5.8mm each), the beginnings of the cames. The strip has a hollowed lower surface and folded 'skirt' to one side. By reference to similar waste from London a 17th-century date can be suggested (Egan 2005, 147; ref. 782); this would seem to be corroborated by finds made in the vicinity recorded on this database.

A corroded cast lead weight, probably a pan weight of post-medieval date. The weight is circular in plan with some bevelling and abrasions from the smaller upper surface to the larger lower. It is decorated on its upper face with a cross in relief dividing the surface into quarters. Incised finely on the flat lower surface is a pair of keys in saltire (cross keys). This device is found on a number of artefacts recorded on this database, all of post-medieval date; the keys are of this style. Through the keys is a vertical incision, with traces of a transverse incision and possible bord…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A post-medieval cast lead circular object, probably a livery mount (c. 18th century). On a broadly circular thick, flat disc the upper half of a creature, probably a dog rampant regardant is moulded in relief above a torse. The piece has corroded to an off-white colour and it has been slightly distorted due to old damage.

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A worn and damaged cast lead possible cloth seal of late medieval or early post-medieval date (c. 1485-c. 1700 AD). On the upper surface the object is broadly circular with some squared-off cuts. Initials are moulded in low relief at its centre: 'HR', where the 'H' is ligated with the 'R'; above is what appears to be a crown. On the other side it is too worn to discern what the decoration is, if any; this side has been cut into a sub-square shape. The object now remains light grey in colour due to the corrosion process. It has been bent in profile.
It is possible that the HR refers…

A cast lead standing weight in the form of a low cone of circular cross-section with a flat base. From a somewhat flattened top emerges an integral suspension loop. The upper surface is decorated with four groups of raised ribs that cover each quarter. There is generally speaking a central rib with two side ribs springing from the same point, splaying out; one of the groups appears to have an extra rib. The weight has corroded to an off-white colour with some scratch marks on the base. Objects found in the vicinity suggest a medieval/post-medieval date for this weight. For a 'bun-shap…

A small cast lead weight of later medieval date used by goldsmiths in relation to bullion. It is rectangular in form with inwardly curving sides. The upper surface is filled by a fleur-de-lis in low relief; the lower surface is plain. The object now has an off-white colour. Its mass of 55.9 grains (3.62g) relates to an eighth of a Paris troy ounce (30.5g) allowing for c. 5% loss to to wear and corrosion. The form and mass are comparable with a pair of bullion weights illustrated in Biggs and Withers (2000, 49; refs. 156, 157) and an example on this database - ref. SF-8F1591.

A cast lead pot mend, used to mend a broken vessel in order to lengthen the period of use after damage had occurred. It is broadly sub-oval and flat in profile, with the sections above and below the slot of similar sizes. There are no discernible pottery fragments within the slot. The repair has corroded to a light-grey colour. Unfortunately such repairs are not diagnostic; a wide date range is therefore offered.
