Iron possible hinge strap fragment. Wrought iron strip of rectangular section with a flattened oval end; the object is broken at its other end next to a circular hole of estimated diameter 7mm. This identification was kindly offered by Dr Kevin Leahy. Given there is only a single hole for a nail to attach the putative strap to a door or shutter, and given that the hole is far from its finished end, an alternative interpretation as a tine detached from a tool such as a hay rake or eel spear might also be entertained. The finder's suggestion that this could be a weapon fragment is not s…

Remains of the grip from an iron shield boss of Dickinson and Harke Type IIb flanged type now in two pieces which do not join. The end of each is split and curved back to form an anchor shape adjacent ot which is the head of a flat, 17.0mm diameter rivet. On the fractured end of one piece are the traces of a rounded flange. The fragments have the folllowing measurements: A. Length 83.3mm, Width 43.3mm, Section 22.0 x 4.3mm, Mass 27.94g B. Length 73.8mm, Width 49.7mm, Section 21.2 x 3.3mm, Mass 21.74g There is little doubt that these pieces come from the same grip.

Iron spearhead of Swanton's Series L. Angular blade, probably corrugated, socket split, now truncated, stump 15.0mm diameter. Blade flame-shaped tapering sharply from maximum width. Down one side of the blade is a deep narrow ridge/step which is off-set to one side. The other side of the blade is obscured but it is likely that this bore a corresponding off-set groove and that the blade was corrugated with a Z section. Some recent damage to socket and the tip of the blade which is bent.

A largely complete wrought iron eel spear. The spear has five barbed blades of which the outer pair are integral with the socketed handle. The remaining three blades are separate pieces which are riveted to the curve which forms the outer blades. A separate curving flat iron bar is rivetted across all five blades to bind them together. Remains of a wooden handle survive and this is held on to the socket by a nut and bolt. The upper part of the handle socket is broken and missing. The spear is likely to be later 19th century in date.

A fragment of an early-medieval or medieval iron padlock, circa 950-1500 AD. The object is part of the bolt, and represents a thick circular end plate with the riveted ends of three springs (the internal locking mechanism) on its external surface. Short stubs from the spines of two of the springs remain on the inner surface, together with a scar from the third. The spines appear to have been thick short rectangles in cross-section, two set in line with each other and the third perhaps perpendicular. The fragment measures 35.4mm in diameter, is 6.5mm in thickness ,and weighs 52.0g. The…

A fragment of an early-medieval or medieval iron padlock, circa 950 AD-1500 AD. The fragment represents the bolt, and has an irregular end-plate. End-plates from these padlock bolts are normally circular, but this has two straight edges joined by a curve, and at least one of the straight edges is thickened as if crushed or broken. Three ends of the springs (the internal mechanism which locks the padlock) protrude from its outer surface where they were riveted through the end-plate. On its inner surface, two short lengths of the spring arms (or 'spines') remain. Although both are b…

Three iron rings of probably Post-Medieval to Modern date, with a combined total weight of 16.39g. All three rings have worn surfaces and measure: 1) 19.05mm in diameter, 4.98mm in thickness, and 5.75g in weight. 2) 18.47mm in diameter, 4.87mm in thickne…

Two iron cast hobnails. A conical head, almost rectangular in plan but triangular in section, and a broken stem which is square in section. Although it is rare for iron nails to survive for a prolonged period, this size and shape conforms to known examples of Roman hobnails. The longest is 17mm long, broken at the tip. The head is 9mm long and 6.5mm wide. It weighs 0.7g. the other is 12mm long from the head to the break. the head is 10.5mm long and 7mm wide. It weighs 0.8g.

An incomplete early-medieval or medieval iron padlock, circa 950-1500 AD. The part surviving is known as the 'bolt', and it has one circular end with part of the inner spring mechanism riveted through it in three places. There are three short bars (known as 'spines') on the inner side, one bent and distorted, the other two parallel to each other and holding the remains of springs between them. Each spine would have had two springs, and two between the better-surviving spines survive to form a V shape. The ends of the spines are visible as rounded bumps on the other side of the end pla…
