An incomplete late early-medieval (late Anglo-Saxon) - medieval copper-alloy cloisonné enamelled disc brooch (late 10th - 11th century), of the Saunderton type (Weetch Type 20.A). The brooch is constructed from a base-plate of copper alloy with six equidistant rounded projections, though one has been broken off. A circular copper-alloy collar, 19 mm in diameter, has been soldered onto this base plate and set within the collar is the cloisonné enamel pattern. The pattern is marked out by copper alloy cells and comprises a six-pointed star for of conjoined curving strips which meet at the collar. Against the collar the cells contain dark blue enamel. The centre of the star they create is filled with enamel which is now blue-green. In the centre there is a circular cell infilled with yellow enamel. The surface of the cells is now cracked in many places, and occasionally pitted. On each of the projecting lobes a small collar of copper strip was soldered; one of the six has been broken off. Each strip would have secured a glass pellet: four remain and are a variety of blues. On the reverse of the base-plate are the remains of the location of twin lugs which would have secured the pin. The catch-plate survives, while the pin lug has been broken through at its centrel; the pin is no longer present. There are patches of gilding remaining on the reverse and on the side of the collar, as well as the front where the strips divide the field into cells.
Bucton (1986, 8) catalogues fifteen of these brooches, they are very similar in form and decoration.
Dimensions: thickness: 4 mm; diameter: 26 mm

'One interesting thing I see is that the feed is broken off without grinding. I normally grind in some grooves before breaking it off, to ensure it breaks at the right spot. It also looks like it's broken while hot, as it's a brittle break. Pers comm Jeroen Zuiderwijk a Dutch prehistoric metalwork specialist on seeing thi images of this axe. 19.9.12.

A cast copper alloy fragment from the bow of a Roman trumpet brooch (75-175 AD). The fragment comprises the mid part of the bow; the head and foot are lost through old patinated breaks. It is crescentic in plan and oval in cross section. It is decorated with a central real flanked above and below by stylised acanthus leaves. The lower edge shows the top of a mid-rib which would have formed the catch plate. The fragment is a mid brownish green colour with a good and well preserved surface patina. This style of Roman brooch can be seen in Richard Hattatt's Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches; page 326-328. These are all dated to the later 1st and 2nd centuries AD
The brooch fragment measures 25.5mm length, 8.1mm wide and is 9.8mm thick; it weighs 6.02 grams.

A fragment of a late Medieval to early Post-Medieval cast copper-alloy purse frame, circa AD1450 - AD1550. The fragment represents a curved piece of the frame which tapers towards its end, and then ends with a rectangular terminal. Along most of its length, the fragment is "D" shaped in cross-section. There is a single hole 3.4mm in diameter, which would have aided the attachment of the frame to the fabric of the purse by sewing. The fragment measures 65.0mm in length, it has a thickness of 5.0mm, and weighs 10.7g. The surface of the metalwork is worn, faint traces of a few lines of illegible decoration and a green patina remain.
Similar examples of purse frame fragments, can be found on the Database, WAW-7F2143, WILT-9B0280, and LEIC-90A033.
