Object type: METAL WORKING DEBRIS
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A group of three objects from the same field, though not necessarily deposited together, all of probably Early Medieval date. All three objects are fragments of waste silver, probably evidence of silver working. They are undecorated and have no dating evidence themselves, but are from a known Early Medieval productive site. There is one larger piece of thick plate (28.9mm long, 15.46mm wide and 4.09mm thick, 4.83g) with all but one of the edges broken or cut. The remaining edge is rounded. One face is irregular. The other is smooth but with wrinkles and small blisters. There is …

An incomplete cast copper alloy Early Medieval strap end probably dating from about the 11th Century. The strap end is an elongated sub triangle in shape with a defined zoomorphic terminal. This terminal is sub rectangular in profile and depicts the snout and eyes of a creature and a pair of ears laid back on to the creature's body; faint decoration along the body shows an incised border near the edge and possibly more on the body but this is difficult to see due to wear. The strap end has a split-plate on the reverse but this broken and is now incomplete; it would have been secured t…

The cast copper-alloy terminal 'loop' from a medieval book clasp. As with such objects the body is broadly semi-circular with a central hole. At the flat end is a wider integral rectangular plate witha rivet hole through it. This is instead of the more usual bar for the strap to loop round. The fitting terminates in a small, perpendicular loop, pierced centrally but bloked by corrosion. Compare DENO-855810 and HAMP-C9A8D5.

A fragment of copper alloy, probably a mount with a rivet still in place. The object is rectangular in plan and D shaped in section, with a separate thin wire copper alloy rivet surviving, with the ends thickened. The other circular rivet hole is empty. It is believed to be Early Medieval based on comparison to other similar finds, and because this site produces many early Medieval finds. Its function is unknown but it could have been part of binding, maybe from a shield or vessel. Compare SWYOR-7CAAE7, SWYOR-7CD8D7 and SWYOR-DBEDF7.

The plate is decorated with notches round the edge giving a serrated effect. There is also some transverse moulding across the top of the hook. Compare LEIC-9FC848 and FAKL-C9E283. A group of eighteen lead alloy objects, originally recorded as polyhedral weights, of Early Medieval date, but now thought to be Post Medieval buckshot. Each consists of a globule of metal impressed with a number of circular depressions. Nine are dark grey and of better quality with clear depressions. The others are more corroded and less clear. These are similar to Treasure Case number 2004 T411, a probable Viking weight also made of lead alloy (and so determined to be Not Treasure). Compare also SWYOR-E809B3 and SWYOR-21D072. Though originally recorded as polyhedral weight…

An incomplete sky blue opaque glass bead of cylinder design. Only one end of the bead survives. There is a circular hole through the centre of the bead. It was made by trailing glass in a spiral - a line can be seen twisting along the length of the bead. Glass beads are very hard to date, but this one is likely to be Early Medieval because it is from a site which produces a lot of Early Medieval material. Compare SWYOR-41CFB4, BERK-6C6D05 and BERK-6F9BF3.

A copper alloy link from a slender chain, perhaps for jewellery. It is Post Medieval to Modern in date. It consists of a central cylinder with a small hole at each end. Projecting from the hole is a wire loop. Both ends of the wire pass into the hole. The remain parallel and against each other for a few milimetres and then divide into a circular loop. One loop is complete, but the one projecting from the other end of the cylinder is splayed open with one end of the wire having escaped from the hole. The loops are able to rotate inside the cylinder, giving it the functionality of a swi…

A small cast copper-alloy medieval bar mount, sub-hemispherical in form. The convex, central lobe is crossed by four incised transverse lines that create ridges. There are fine longitudinal incisions across the ridges. The two smaller perforated side lobes are slightly flattened at their terminals; they both retain their rivets. There is also part of a rove, or the metal to which the fitting was attached surviving ont he back of one of the rivets. A copper alloy circular object, perhaps a mount, of probable Early Medieval date. It is a circular disc of copper alloy sheet. There are four circular holes through the plate, one in each angle of an incised cross with flared arms. There are traces of gilt in the incised lines. There is no evidence of attachment on the reverse, but one edge is broken, so there may have been an attachment there. The same design can be seen on early Medieval brooches such as NMS-698432 and NMS-993175, and on a mount HAMP-10B565 (though this is given a later date).
