Medallic As, depicting Hadrian (117-138).
Obverse description: Bust of Hadrian bearded and draped right. The hair and a short trimmed beard are rendered as tightly curled.
Obverse inscription: HADRIANVS AVG COSIII PP
[?]Reverse description: Bust of a man, unbearded and bare shouldered. The hair is similarly treated to the obverse bust, but the nose is slightly more hooked.
[?]Reverse inscription: HADRIANVS AVG COSIII PP
The object was reported as a coin, albeit one whose paired obverses and duplicated legend have not been encountered either by the finder or by Cliff Reeves, who has kindly researched this object. The formula COS III appears on coins of Hadrian from AD 119 onwards. Dr Richard Abdy kindly comments that he refers to such double headed coins as 'Medallic Asses', and that one side of this coin appears to be from a hitherto unknown die.
Diameter: 26.7mm, Weight: 13.18gms, die axis: 6.
