A worn and corroded copper-alloy As of Agrippa, struck under the reign of emperor Gaius (Caligula), AD 37-41; 'Neptune standing left' reverse type. It was issued by Caligula in honour of his deceased grandfather. This coin shows Neptune on the reverse, alluding to Agrippa's victory (for Augustus) at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, when Antony and Cleopatra were defeated. British copies of this coin were made during the reign of Claudius, so it is quite possible that this is contemporary copy. Compare Sear Volume I number 1812, and BH-E818A4, KENT-BB4C91, SF-D01DE7 and SU…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy globular headed pin, with the stem missing, leaving just a stub at the base of the head. The head is 10.5mm in diameter and 9mm high. The stem has a section of 2.7mm in diameter, and is 2mm long from the head to the break. Globular headed pins are difficult to date accurately, due to their non-diagnostic style and ease of manufacture meaning they were produced in the Roman and Medieval periods. However, this example does not have a collar, and the patina seems consistent with Roman objects, so a tentative Roman date is suggested.
