County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A silver gilt hooked tag dating from the 16th century. The dress hook is trefoil in plan, with an external knop in each angle. Each lobe is domed and surrounded by an applied twisted wire border. The knops are domed pellets, and a matching one is in the centre of the plate between the three lobes. The pellets also have twisted wire borders. The plate of the lowermost lobe is extended into a point at the base. On the flat reverse is soldered a hook which would have projected downwards and curved backwards, but only the upper part of this survives. There are also scars from a solde…

Object type: INGOT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A fragment of an ingot of silver of probable Early Medieval date. The fragment of waste silver is probably evidence of silver working. It comes from a known Early Medieval site. The fragment is an undecorated, angular chunk. It is trapezoidal in section with a flange projecting from one bottom corner (perhaps a casting seam?). The corners are rounded and the sides are fairly smooth apart from occasional irregularities. The ends may be cuts across a rod or ingot; they are angled and oblique. Though most of the metal is a purple grey colour with a reflective silver sheen, there is on…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A silver plate possibly from a strap end of probable Early Medieval date. The plate is rectangular but one end is broken. Both faces are plain and the complete edges are slightly bevelled. Both sides and one end are complete, but the patina on the complete end is missing for most of the length. The remaining end is a patinated break. On one face, part of the surface is roughened and a lighter colour. This may be corrosion, perhaps from another object. The original surface is smooth and reflective. There is no evidence of attachment. The plate is difficult to date alone, but a…

A copper alloy fragment of an unidentified object, probably of Early Medieval date. It is roughly square, but all the edges are ancient breaks. The front face is decorated with deeply incised (chip-carved) designs, of which not enough survive to be able to explain the design. The reverse is plain and flat. The metal is an unusual colour, being buff coloured with a grey surface in places, though it does seem to be copper alloy rather than a lead alloy.

A copper alloy Medieval harness pendant dating from the 14th or 15th century probably. It is lozenge shaped with a fleur projecting from the centre of each side. The suspension loop is broken off and missing. The design is "Azure, a cross saltire Or (or argent) between four fleur-de-lis". This design but with an ermine cross is the traditional arms of St Hugh of Lincoln, also, used by St Hugh's College, Oxford, but the cross on this pendant is unlikely to be ermine. The gilding or silver is missing. Alternatively, the metal could have been left bare to give a golden colour.
