An incomplete copper alloy Medieval strap end with a sheet spacer probably dating from 1270 - 1350 AD. It is sub-rectangular with broken ends which are both patinated and rounded. The strap end is formed from two plates and a sheet spacer between. The sheet spacer stops before the attachment end to leave space for the strap. No decoration is visible, but the strap end may have once had an incised design. It now has a dusty green patina. There are the remains of a copper alloy rivet in the centre of the attachment end. See page 147 of Dress Accessories by Egan and Pritchard.

An incomplete copper alloy Early Medieval strap end of Thomas's Class A type 2 dating from the late 8th to early 10th century. It is an oval plate with a squared off end (the other end is broken). The complete end is in the form of a zoomorphic snout terminal with incised features. he terminal is very flat rather than moulded. The main body of the strap end is decorated with incised panels of geometric decoration. The attachment end is missing having broken off, but the break is patinated. Thomas comments that this type of strap end dominates the cheaper end of the strap-end market. S…

A silver plate possibly from a strap end of probable Early Medieval date. The plate is rectangular but one end is broken. Both faces are plain and the complete edges are slightly rounded. Both sides and one end is complete, but the patina on the complete end is missing for most of the length. The remaining end is a patinated break. There are very small rough patches on both faces, possibly corrosion from a nearby object. The original surface is smooth and reflective. There is no evidence of attachment. The plate is difficult to date alone, but as it is from an Early Medieval …

A copper alloy Early Medieval strap end dating from the late 8th to early 10th century. It is a Thomas Class A type 2 strap end, a type characterised by curvilinear or geometric patterns, and noted to dominate the cheaper end of the strap end market. The strap end is cast from one sheet of copper but is split at one end to allow insertion of the strap. The back plate is missing and the upper plate is worn very thin. The strap end is a pointed oval in plan tapering to a flat-nosed zoomorphic terminal. The body of the strap end is separated into three panels of decoration; the zoomor…

A plate from a copper alloy Medieval strap end dating from 1270 - 1450 AD. The plate is tongue shaped with a scalloped attachment edge and round grooved aperture flanked by a copper alloy rivet with a flat head on each side. The closed end is pointed and has a projecting pointed tip. The reverse shows a scar where the forked spacer was soldered. The metal is grey green and probably has a high tin content. Compare number 653 and 654 on page 142 of Egan and Pritchard's Dress Accessories.

The other end is broken, but there is a circular rivet hole in the centre near the break. None of the rivet holes line up with marks on the other plate, suggesting that the bend may not be in its original position. Egan and Pritchard (1993:159) illustrates some s…
